Around 10 years ago, I played in a local band where the singer owned one of these keyboards. As I recall, it had a few problems with worn sliders that caused the sound to "cut out" when they were in certain positions - but the string sounds blew me away!
To this day, I've been trying to find a sample or patch for one of my newer synths (I have a Yamaha Motif 7 and a Korg Triton) that had this type of string sound, and I've never found anything quite like it.
The Prelude has sort of a "thick, almost raspy - yet not quite harsh" sound to the strings. It can really fill a room with a wall of haunting sound. As others noted, the brass is pretty useful too (and depending on what type of music you play, might indeed be the best thing on this synth for you). Organ sounds were decent, but nothing memorable as a "signature sound" of the Prelude I couldn't do on other synths. Piano is well, electronic sounding and not very realistic.
If I could find one of these cheap (and in good working order), I'd certainly buy it and add it to my collection.

I brought this synth today from a secondhand store, and I only paid $125 new zealand dollars for it, thats about $50 usa, sweet.
It sounds great, everything seems to be working, except the flange lever in the modulation group has absolutely no effect on anything (is it broken ???) but the lfo section is where the weird and interesting sounds happen anyway, if some minute adjustments (to the Eq, lfo and octave)you can make a brass or string sound resemble a choir, well an analogue choir.
if you like old sounds and have spare cash, buy it, I love Boards of Canada and this synth can make some very nice BoC-esque warmth.

I just bought mine yesterday. The Brass is awesome. So are the strings. The organ is decent, and I'll probably never use the piano. The fact that it's mono bothers me, but the controlability of the sounds is so good that I'll get over that soon enough. I paid $300 and believe it was well worth it.

I love this keyboard > I play in a punk -new wave band called the lost sounds . We only use analog or digital anlog key boards and out of the many we own or use this is my favorite. Compared to most key boards I think it is quit easy to use and is not going to intimedate you in a live preformance. The brass is great with lots of attack and swell .The e -q is great and if you use it for a top keyboard you can plug your bottom one into it and only have one output for 2 keyboards. anyways unlike most of th other revceiws that said the strings were the best thing I say the brass is much cooler and fun. if your looking for great string sounds check out the roland strings

I got mine used back in 1987 as a gift and didn't really use it much until a few years ago. However, I am still in the process of figuring out what this board can do. Great strings and brass, and the "Clav" key patch is great for adding to any other sound on the board. The EQ sounds best when set somewhere in-between "dry" and "mix." On-board FX enhance quite well anything running into it. The board is great in concert with other instruments and I have used it for everything from techno to thrash. The biggest drawback is that when using multiple voices, the addition of any organ sound makes the mix sound like, well, only an organ. Second is that it is a small board. But being analog and mostly metal, it's still effective for beating people over the head if they get too close to the stage during a show.... Rating is based entirely on the fact that every other review gave it the same score....
