Some of these opinions..I've used Sequential equipment since the mid-80s. The Prophet 600's a thoroughly professional 'board-it wouldn't be easy for anyone who claims to be able to tell the difference to discern a '5 from a '600 from a Max in a mix, actually, if it's well programmed. The old stuff for the most part ALL sounds better. Only true reason some criticize is that they probably don't understand programming, 'cause just about any Sequential 'board from the Max to the '600 to the Pro One gives you pro sounds that (1) compare favorably to a Prophet 5, and (2) blow out any of today's synths outside of a Voyager. If i played you 80s records using Sequential 'boards that weren't a Prophet 5 you'd be surprised how &^%$$# great they sound, as do almost all the older synths.
The '5's thicker and punchier sure, but that's only noticable upon direct comparison with the two 'boards side by side, and it's not a crucial difference in the context of today's music where almost ALL of the older synths are considerably more powerful and ballsy than today's compromises. Sequential, Moog, Arp, Oberheim, Yamaha or Roland synth will dominate, because they're all measurably bigger and more powerful than today's plasti-synths like the JP8000, Virus, Novation, etc. Make no mistake, the new stuff's great for making music and is far more flexible, but purely on sound there's no comparison with a '600, a '5, any of the older synths.
