I've just bought my second Prophet 5, a 3.2 with midi. I also own a rev 2. All this talk about a more powerful sound from the older machines is crap. The synths sound the same. The rev 3 machines have more controls and are more reliable. They also stay in tune. Both synths benefit from running through a good, rough effects unit like a quadraverb. A midied Prophet 5 is a real super synth! The rev 2s suffer from silly faults a lot like those on the memorymoog. They run very warm and implode like memorymoogs do. A rev 2 is not worth as much as a rev 3. Do not pay as much. You will be ripped off. A rev 3 can be midied and is a much better long term prospect. Don't let all this talk about ssm superiority get to you. It's not true. Just net talk from people who have owned neither. A Prophet 5 is the best analogue poly ever. It helped to define 80s music and music ever since.

Let's face it, if you need to buy one analogue then this is it. The prophet 5 is the greatest analogue of all time. It has a warmth and texture that is sooo right. Nothing is as good. It is a true classic. Many crack on about other synths being this and that. The 5 is everything and more. The look is fantastic. It looks like a classical instument. That sound..oh yes! The DX killed it. Bastard synth!

As good as analogue gets. Not overrated and great sounding. Lots of jealous talk on this site. Few own these babies now. Heard everywhere. If any analogue is worth 5 marks, then this one is

I just love my Prophet~5 (Rev 3.31) it is one of my favourites synths. I don’t know why people say unreliable? I have had mine since 1998 and I haven’t had any problems at all. My P5 only has one owner before me and it is in excellent condition. The only time it has been to the doctor is when I installed MIDI and upgraded from 3.2 to 3.3. The doctor also fixed the classic power supply problem that makes the LED’s to flicker and some P5:s to halt especially if MIDI is installed.
I give it 4 out of 5 only my Mini sounds warmer…

I have owned a rev 3.3 for a number of years. They do have a distinctive esoteric quality and it can be very 'phat'if required. However, aside from my Memorymoog, it is the most unreliable axe that I have ever owned with a constant habit of ditching its' sounds and replacing them with white noise or just switching off for a few weeks. That being said, I've still got it so I must like it.......
