I've played one of these for sometime now and have really enjoyed it. There are many bugs in the operation system and there are many reasons not to buy one. First off the display goes very dark. If you boot up after switching off in edit mode the system locks up. The wavestation is a greater piece of machinery. Does it really sound that great? I dont think so. The chorus is rough sounding and the strings are weak. If you do not believe me then judge it against a Roland XP60. It is very difficult to work with and is very frustrating, you get a good sound going and the os locks up. Sequential did not develop it well enough and moved their work over to Korg where they got things right, and made a beautiful sounding machine in the wavestation sr. I would like to have a good session on this synth to experiment with what it can possibly do but my work gets in the way and restricts what I can learn. There are other users that swear by this synth and I will respect what they say, but I cannot agree with the total respect given to this synth as it does not fit in with my garbaged experience which has been frustrating. If the os was open you could iron out some of the glitches and have a great hybrid synth. I would like to burn my own boot up eprom and really get into the heart of this mother.

I will give it top marks as it is a US synth and I am from the US.

It is a nice but flawed synth.

Recently had to let mine go to finance house repairs. A massive and unique sounding synth. I was scared about long term survival. Some chips are rare and expensive which must be a concern. Prices have dipped a bit recently which, I believe is reflecting this problem as much as general trends in second hand synths. The synth power is huge. Loads of programming features and lush oscillators make for a great package. The filter is dark and warm which trims up some of the resonant waves in rom. A much loved synth. They won't last forever unless Wine County start commissioning some chips, which is an awful shame. This was the best Sequential synth. Well built, except for the what...and well featured. I've heard talk about the merits of the wavestation. That's a great synth but is not as original sounding as the VS which is unique. There is nothing that sounds the same. Nothing! I am already regretting letting it go, though I need a new back door even more. Oh dear..

I think this debate whether it is better than this and not as good as that a.s.o. ought to end now. I personally think it is the best, BUT i don't think everyone else ought to think the same. Some prefer a different sound, or look or keyboard feel or whatever, and that's fine. But this professional Glen Steiger saying the only good thing about the VS is the filter: it is obvious to me that you've never owned one. I personally think it's the best because of the unique and lush sound which is due to 1) The filter 2)the chorus and 3)the vast programmabillity (incl. vectoring, waveseq. arpeggios, LFOs and great envelopes, and yes, the random programming, which let you literally delve into neverland. And, when you come back, you do a little editing and... voila, you have an entirely new and wonderful sound.

The Prophet VS sounds great with its fully resonant, Curtis filter. Talk of other synths and what they have or haven't got is academic. This is a magical offering from Sequential. The sounds are 'American' as others have said all over the web. It is lush sounding and very expressive. The scope for new sounds and effects is endless. This must be one of the greatest synths of all time. It never sounds just like one type of synth. It is sampled, analogue, va and vs all rolled up into one. The specification is huge. All aspects work very well. I think the chorus sounds very lush and quiet and can be easily and effectively tweaked. I can't understand the criticism.

The arpeggiator is a strong point. Very versatile. That filter...ahhh! forget a wavestation, this is the one to have.
