Yo Andrew...
The Sh101 does a couple a' good things..first thing that comes to my mind is Acid noises..nice warbly acid basslines, not like the 303, but good with the 303 noise..Some of the DEEPEST subs i've ever heard..oddest noises, and cool EFX are whatcha get..Colors come in Gray, Blue, and Red..ranges from 400-550 depending on color..theres even Grip mods for you use it as a guitar controller type of thing..

This synth is also used a lot by Dub/Dancehall Reggae, as well as a small number of Hip-Hop artists. Just mentioning that because no one else did.

A cool synth, and great looking..hey comes in many colors..and you can wear it! As for sounds..very cool..buy it over a 303..not nearly as limitted and can do some of the same tricks. Pretty good for making a variety of sounds from pads to percussion to basses. Very moddable, and with fx it sounds very sweet. The sequencer is really not the best, but sampling is always an option.. I recommnd this for trance, goa, etc..great for that kind of stuff..so I beg you..especially for the price..buy it before the overused 303.

Save yourself some money and get a better synth for the money,
Get an MC-202 -- a much much better sequencer with 303 accents and slides, and that crazy deep resonant bass of the 101 resides here too, they're exactly the same synth. Plus you get two din sync outs for your other Roland Sync boxes none of that on the lowly 101.
SH-101's go for $500-600 regularly, A much better machine the MC-202 go for between $250-$450.
Hmm.. which would I buy... duhh..
101's are good, 202's are that much better. And yes I know the 202 has one less wave for the LFO than the 101 -- whoooppee!

Just felt the need to say... The SH-09 is also plastic. Only parts of it are metal. And you cannot say get a sh-09 instead of a sh-101. They both have their personalities and sounds. My best tip is to do like me, get one (at least) of each!!! A lot of money and my only bad experience is that the output gets worn and so does the printing above controllers. Problem one is easily solved since the headphone output work as good! And the other - soon you know'em by heart and otherwise I guess you'll have to paint it :-(
