I have two SH 101's; they have alot of character and are very fun, I sync them up via CV/gate and use the sequencer with a TR 606 to trigger. Hours of fun are to be had alternatley tweaking these synths with the TR rhythm,morphing the sound,creating a sound that always is different and satisfying. Sounds like a 303 crossed with a juno. It can also create very cool analog drum sounds for sampling when you really learn how to use it. I would agree that for leads it lacks "thickness", and at times even sounds cheesy, but it is awesome for its sub bass sounds and bleeps. Anybody who says the filter is shit is dead wrong; the filter here is lethal when tuned, it can produce resonant sounds so sharp they will tear your eardrums, in a flash it can be tweaked down to an earth shaking sub bass. The downside is that it is often difficult to find them in good condition(like most vintage synths), they are fragile and prone to tuning problems (like most analog instruments) ie they dont seem to track well across the keyboard unless well tuned, though i understand this is less of a problem when using midi to cv converters. Yes, they are limited, yes they are trendy, yes thay are getting more expensive,yes they are worth it.

Although this machine isn't very versatile, it can ( with the help of an effects processor, preferably distortion.. actually, I have only tried it with a zoom-guitar-distortion-effect thingie) sound great.. Excellent sound for not so much money.. Much better than..?

Just a quick suggestion here. I always hear everyone mentioning about the kick drum you can model on these things (I've tried it...got actually about six kick sounding sounds, including one that sounded like the '808 sustained low bass kick' when I upped the release on the ENV). One thing no one ever mentions however is the fact that the SH101 can be used for other percussion sounds, albeit electronic sounding so you'd end up with an almost kraftwerk-y sort of sound on most unless you use the NOISE both as a waveform or in the LFO oscillator MOD, then you end up with something almost shrieking and clanking if tweaked right. Perfect for industrial music. Feed the audio into your favourite sampler and build yourself a drumkit with minimal sample editing, tweaking, etc... I'm half tempted to put up a page with a list of settings for all these sounds.

Hmm.. the comparing the SH101 to an MKS80 isnt fair. Of course the MKS80 is better, but's you could get a lot more than an sh101 for the price of an MKS80

uhh, another over rated roland synthesizer, i just sold mine to pay for a mks80 with programmer a far superior machine for almost the same price. start looking at features and flexability and forget hype and image if you want the best roland sound get a jupiter8/6/mks80. the rest of their synths are plainly infurior to the classic american synths like moogs, arps, prohpets and oberheims, that is unless you want the cheesy (and painfully overused) acid shit sound. even if you do the jupiters do it better. good deal for $100, rip off for $250+. that is in my opinion anyway
