A fantastic little synth. One of the best of all time. It does sooo much more than just bass. It is great for leads and sound effects. It has all of the really useful things a synth should have. The fun is enormous. you do not need a Phd in electronics and acoustics to work this one out. Throw a few switches and tweek the odd slider and great things happen. It has a good sequencer and arpeggiator which add to the fun. It is a reliable synth. I've seen a few with stupid, pointless mods. Avoid these if you mean to buy. Get a good one in clean condition with all of the slider caps and a battery cover. They cost about £300 for one in this condition. Money very well spent. The mod grip is a waste of money. You look stupid poncing about like you're a guitarist. It also doesn't really do much. The Sh101 is one of the best synths ever for sheer fun and great sounds. They are not as common as they used to be. Many have been collected and have owners with heaps of cash who wouldn't sell on for a king's ransom!

The 101 excels at one thing very well.... BASS! The low end is just quality, it can be smooth or growly as you like. Can even do a pretty cool 303 emulation without the accented and glide notes. Every time you use the thing you can get sounds you've never heard before. Not much use for leads or pads, as theres only one oscillator tuning section and that works for all 3 waveforms :o( However, you can get lots of background layers from this thing. The pulsewidth modulation really is to die for, the best i've heard on any synth. You even have trumpet and brass patches to program from the destruction manual.... get a grip roland!

Love this li'l synth!. Had one back in '84, used it playing live in a prog rock sort of band, loaned it to a relative, and never saw it again! Recenty came across a friend who had one in his studio arsenal. Did some swapping and became the new owner! Turned out that most of the sliders were shot! Shed a few tears, then went on ebay and lo and behold, found a firm selling a full replacement set of upper sliders!! Got 'em all soldered in last night, and it lives again! The great tones, arpeggiator, sequencer all brought back great memories. Plan to do some recording with this device real soon. It was worth restoring!

I wasnt very impressed when i first bought this synthesizer. I think it may have to do with the fact that i was quite new to the world of electronic technology and started making music via vst plugins from the beginning....
but slowly over time, I got a chance to dabble more in the 101, and still i wasnt impressed. This ALL changed as soon as i got a CV/MIDI converter and sequenced the keyboard from a midi software sequencer. It sounded completely different as soon as i did that and i couldnt believe it was the same synth that i had been playing around with just a few days earlier. In a nutshell, i will NOT sell this thing, even though i was tempted to do so in the past. This synth rocks....and im a digital kind of guy too. It has heightened my interest in analogue synthesis.

I owned an sh-101 for abour a year over which it was toyed with repeatedly. It's a cool little monosynth but that's all it really is. Pretty versitile in a studio but a lot things are when used creatively. You can stroke cool sounds out of it but it has no memory. Sequencer is easy and fun but basic and limited. Sorry if your a fan but scopes a bit narrow for this thing. A cool collector's piece that can be useful but there's a lot out there you can buy for the cash you'll spend on this. Just keep that in mind. Don't buy this and expect it to blow your mind. If you can afford it and got other synths for it to sit with you'll probably dig it.
