I bought a WSA1 in a moment of weakness. The guy at the store said it,s been in his store for a while and he would let it go for $1000 brand new. I took it home hopeing to to have a nice workstation to record midi track with. The sounds are horibble. Thin and weak, no sonic balls to speak of. The organs were beyond bad even with the digital drawbars and the special organ mode. Most of all all of the menus, even the seqencer menus were overly complex and did not in my quest to produce music. I ended up useing the keyboard as a controller in my studio because it has nice semi-weight feel to it. I soon traded it in on somthing else.

Had Wsa1 for 6 years now. Used Yam SY99 for 2 yrs before this and have used Trinity and Roland 1080 for bits since. There is a thinness to the sounds on WSA1 that is at first annoying. However, sounds play well with other instruments - jazz/rock bands and in orch pit as it does not drown other instruments - it remains distinct. Simple to use with reasonable synth action. Out of all sounds 1 good piano, 2 good e pianos, v good wind - sax, and enough usable synth pads for ambient music - warm & breath. guitars also good. Organs lack drive of classic rock organ, but where part of more complex arrangement they sound great. Esp good if band has lost bass player - gt clarity on layered combis with keysplit - bass organ, bass guitar, bass piano, sbass and synth.
For sequenced arrangements keeps indiv parts clear esp if tapped in or off web. however realtime playing sequences v. diff to sound tight.

I love the WSA1 and recently re-introduced myself to it after a year or two away from synth music. Evolving pads are its strongest point, but there are some great drum sounds (crash cymbals excepted), and it has a wonderful raw sound which makes for much realism. It takes some getting used to, but despite its complexity, it's remarkably easy to program once you're familiar with the architecture. I am putting together a new web site dedicated to this synth (as of May 2002), with patches and articles... I have gotten Technics (well, Panasonic actually) to reproduce the manuals as PDF files on their web site too. This should help out those who are buying used without a manual.

I have WSA 1 (not a WSA-R) for more than 4 years and I have to say that it is heavy duty. I want to buy another but I can't find where to buy one. A problem i s that the drum kits are very poor. I use a Carnival (Emu) module for the rhitm parts.
