This synth is tight. I only paid like $55 for it, originally intending to use it mostly for basslines. I discovered that it's good for much more than that, though!

For a synth this old, I think the presets are really kind of nice. The famous Lately Bass patch sounds as phatt as everyone says it does, some of the pianos have a nice sound to them, and it really excels at creating obviously synthetic brass and string sounds that I tend to like as well.

After the presets have been used to death, and you're looking for something new, the synth is really not too bad to program, considering that it's a 1U rack unit with like eight buttons. The menu system is pretty logical, and doesn't seem to go much deeper than three layers at any point. I really like it how they use the LCD to draw little figures for the algorithms and operators so you can get a visual feel for what's going on without having to refer back to the manual.

Once the synth is all ready to go with the right sound, it seems like there's never much trouble in getting it to fit in a mix. It seems to have a nice thick sound that my TG33 just can't match...

So, if you're trying to mimic accoustic instruments, it's probably best to look elsewhere, but if you want clearly synthetic sounds for any sort of electronic music, I think this machine is a must-have for the quality and price.

As used by Derrick May, Orbital, Carl Craig, this is a fantastic little box. I ended up buying a second one cos I loved the noise it made so much. Progranmming might seem daunting at first but stick with it and you'll find a world of thundering basses, ear piercing potramento tones and harsh percussion noises.

For the price this is one of the best pieces of kit I ever bought

I've had a TX81Z for about a year now. I'm finally getting some use out of it. I connected it to my Yamaha DX21. It sounds awesome. Now I may find the time to start programming this thing.
