I hate to say this, but being a bit selective I wont pick a TX-81Z again. I used to have fun with it until I bought a DX-7IIFD (which is still my master keyboard)and found out that for serious FM sounds it's better to pick the real thing: a DX7II or much better the TX-802. Programming the TX-81Z needs some help, an editor helps you to explore the depths of not so simple FM. Of course the TX81Z is a bargain... Some people is selling them for $90 in good condition. But once again I find difficult to use digital FM sounds in modern mixes, except for a few basses and bright leads and e.pianos...

I agree with the guy who said total bass monster. This is huge. Twin mono out go to my desk to create a nice layered bass. Programming of this thing from the front panel can drive you mad. Get sound diver or something and it gets better. With perserverance though it reveals itself to be a capable machine.
Basic FM architecture with only four voices compared to the DX7s six. However, more waveforms are available which makes up for it.
Nice and cheap and definitely worth it.

Good points: Killer machine-lots of edge-in your face-cuts through a mix-produces wicked, unpredictable sounds if experimented with. Bad points: Interface is not for the impatient-no instant gratification-tedious to program. Verdict: A great synth with loads of character that can best be used to produce sounds with a harsh, up-front quality that would be difficult (or impossible) to match using other synths, but good results often demand some tedious programming. But for the prices I've seen them go for - definitely worth the effort. The perfect compliment to a couple of warm, fuzzy, bubbly analogues.

Got this baby for $100. I still haven't figured out how to program this thing, but the previous owner left some of his own patches on it. Wicked stuff!!
This definitely isn't a machine I'll reach for everyday, as I do a lot of pop arrangements too, but if I wanted to do something more "edgy," I know this thing will be very useful. (using this thing with an analog filter sounds like it'd be real fun! I gotta look into that... when I get the dough ;))
I'd have given it a 4 rating, but its super-low price warrants a 5 in my book. (I still can't believe that people are getting rid of this baby for so CHEAP!!!) As long as Yanni isn't your definition of perfect music, TX81Z will find a good niche in your mix.

I picked up one of these for $100 bucks. I pretty felt happy from day one however it took a lot of search before I found some patches in SYSEX form on the net. Then, I had TONS of sounds for it. I use it and my SY22 blended together for a GREAT sound. Editing is interesting, but generally far to time consuming and rarely quickly productive. Slight modifications of patches is the way to go or for strange sounds modify away to your hearts desire. I has 4 banks, 3 for presets, you can sysex the last bank of 32 sounds. Stack a couple of these for some really fun nice killer sounds. Treat with an effects unit and your ready to go. I have SYSEX bank(s) of sounds for this at my web site. Definately worth what I paid for it. Remember, bang per buck is important but if you want the latest stuff, slap the bucks down on a new machine. Mixing outputs of modules is a cool way to get fat sounds and flexability for low cost.
