If you are interested in synthesis this synth is a good choice. It´s not new but sounds good. Typical FM: El.pianos, wind, bells and that kind of stuff. But it´s possible to make some totally new musical instruments too. As I said: If you like to explore sonic space, this one is a good choice. Once you become familiar with the interface it´s quite easy to operate. Making sounds is fun but you need patience.... You need to complete the module with a cho/verb to make it sound warm. But every new synth nowadays also depends very much on effects.

These last couple of reviewers on here must not be experienced in how to work FM or something because this synth is awesome,I have tried the dx-7 and other fm synths but in my opinion this synth has to be the best quality fm synth I have used(sound wise not programming, but fm is very difficult to program in the first place you should already expect it)I own some newer synths and the tx81z's sounds still stand up to them even nowadays.I only paid about $70 for mine and If you love the sound of FM I would say this synth would be worth at least $300,note this is not a good synthesizer for beginners.

Had one for 4 years. Pain in the butt is right! Interface sucks and its way out-dated and way over-rated. Im glad i sold mine and never looked back. good riddance. Buy this only if you own stock in Excedrin.

I got mine in 1999 and I really like the sounds that come out of it. I use it with an ART FXR effects unit for some spacey noises. Pain in the butt to program though.
