I had one of these circa 1992 and couldn't program it beyond strings & bell sounds, so I sold it. Then I read some reviews here on Sonic State and the old Harmony Central and realized I probably never really understood this beast. I picked one up a couple years ago for $75 and loaded some excellent programs from the Yahoo CZ/VZ user group - wow, what a difference that made! Those patches got me started, and after a few long programming sessions, I now have several banks of excellent, useable sounds. The VZ10M needs external effects, but the synth power is amazing. I started making classic sounds like resonant synth bass & leads, huge strings, Pink Floyd-ish "on the run" arpeggios and "any colour you like" delay lead sounds, a great wurlitzer, the Tom Sawyer growly reso-sweep, soft electric pianos, raspy vocal choirs, pipe/jazz organs, ethereal bells, glassy percussive sounds, lead guitar sounds with mod-wheel controlled feedback, wind/noise sweeps, warbling pads, Lucky Man square wave, Taurus bass, osc-sync sweeps ... and then from there you can get into classes of sounds I can't even describe. 8 oscillators, each with 8-stage envelopes, various combinations of phase or ring modulation, an LFO for pitch, and another LFO for amplitude/timbre. Then put 4 of those sounds in split/layer/delay combi's. The portamento and monophonic trigger mode is really, really good too. Except for a grand piano or drum kits, it covers the bases quite well (you'd never know that from the factory patches) and then from there you can take it way, way into wacky territory. And oh yeah, I use it live no problem.
