Many people say this keyboard is hard to program, well....it's not. So don't let them scare you. However, when first learning to program, it is better to master one thing at a time, then move on to the next.
The Wavestation is truly unique and it would be a shame if you didn't own one. This synth will become extremely sought after in the coming years. So if you own one, hold on to it awhile and sell it when its value goes up again.

I won't use the WS's wavesequencing for percussive parts because it won't keep a tight feel. Supposedly the EX versions (the later versions) are better at holding the beat, but I've had the EX chip installed in mine and it still lags really bad. The more polyphony you use, the worse it gets.
However, the WS is great for wavesequencing textures, pads, drones, and that sort of thing. It can sound very thick if you want it to.
The onboard effects are great too.
If you're into creative synth programing, don't pass this one up!

I picked up a used Wavestation a few months ago thinking I could use it as a "poor man's Prophet VS"...turns out it does'nt do VS sounds too well because of its filter stucture (no resonance) and there is no ailiasing (a cool high frequency buzz) found on the original... I think the Microwave XT is much better at doing VS type sounds. However, after programming it with my own custom patches, the Wavestation does do other classes of sounds really well...strange/dark/ominous ever-changing textures...so well that I've decided to keep it.

I really love this machine! At first I thought I got the wrong thing for hardhitting minimal techno. But after reading the manual for three times and putting some effort in programming my own wavesequences, I think it´s a great machine. (btw I do all the programming on my Wavestation EX without a computer) The editor I own is a demo-version which stops after fifteen minutes of use. I only use it to save my programs.)
The basic sounds (PCM) are good, nothing more, nothing less. But when you program them in the right order and add the great Wavestation effects to it, you´ll get the right sounds! Dark, sinister and constantly evolving...
This machine is quite old, but not backdated yet and I think I´ll hang on to it for a while!
PS. 4 out of 5 because lack of resonance...

Fantastic, I have purchased Manual on the keyboard but it is still a bit daunting. If anyone has any info about the programming I would appreciate as much of as possible. odell Stroud
