The really sad thing about the AN200 is that it could have been a reasonable groove-box (as well as a decent synth) with a couple of features. Number one would be the ability to edit at least two measures (if not four like the Electribes). Number two would be if the sequencer had the ability to use more of the synth's polyphony. Number three would be to be able to switch patterns without the bug so many have commented on. I really like the pattern reverse feature, as well as the ability to go half/double speed (tempo) on the fly. I haven't been able to morph scenes using the Free EG either. I hate this style of Yamaha manual. It reminds me of the DJX 2 (another very flawed product) manual.

I've had this machine for over 6 years. Fantastic synthesizer with endless sound shaping posibilities. The software is great giving you a ton of control over the sound that is not available on the module's control surface. Drums are somewhat useful if you get creative with them, but do not buy this machine thinking its a one stop music production box. Much better off getting a dedicated drum machine. My ER1 plays very nice with it as does the rest of my hardware. Sits very well in the mix and sounds amazing with some outboard efx. I'm planning on buying another one and using it strictly as a mono bass machine as it does that so well. Highly recommend using an external sequencer with this bad boy to avoid the first note skip is playing continuous melodies.

Ok,now I have read about this thing to no end and still no one has noticed a obscure yet tantalizing fact...The AN200 and the DX200 combined make a HARDWARE version of the Native Instruments FM7!!Hello?I heard the FM7 and the sounds it had and I wanted a hardware version..alas AN200+DX200!I have both right in front of me now and play them both(channel 1 for AN,channel 2 for DX).Forget the drums and pattern sequencing...you can't even make a decent reggeaton beat with this machine but with the RS7000 or RM1x or even just the Boss DR770..you caaan!FM7 in hardware form..anyone??Anyone?Beuler..Beuler?Rate 5 for sounds and AN/DX functions...samples okay and are better drums than say RM1x as they span 88 keys! so 4 on samples,I rate 0 on beats...I need 4 bars not 1.

One thing some people don't know about this thing or at least not listed in the reviews here. Got a screwdriver? Open this little bad boy up. You'll find a single board and what? A PLG-AN card.

I paid $130 US on ebay. Now, every place I have checked online, the PLG-AN Card is going for $200 plus brand new. If you have say a Motif or other PLG excepting board you'll be glad you bought this. That's right you can remove it and pop it in your board. The AN will still function without it. I haven't tried to install any other PLG into it yet.

I rate 5 out 5 on everything except the drums. Which sound like DJ-X patches. Remember the childish DJ-X keyboard? Yamaha would have killed the market if they would have put parts/tracks 2-4 as standard AWM "Synth" sounds instead of drums sounds. You'd have a killer 4 part/track synth and the rest would have been history.

I would fire the person at Yamaha who came up with the marketing phrase "Loopfactory". Seems like they built this synth around that word and didn't see the potential of a 1 part analog modeling and 3 part regular AWM synth.

Jose Fernando Suarez Suarez a part-time user from Spain writes:
Hi folks, last summer I bought the AN200 for a price that was a joke. The patterns are nothing out of this world, only a little of them are enough interesting. The drum parts are simple, but the main power of the silver box is the synth. I was looking for an AN1x but it was impossible, so when I discover the AN200 and it was priced in only 180€ I bought it. The sound is Yamaha V.A., it has his own charisma, it can sound as hard as you want or as sweet you can.The only thing is that today only a little people program their own synths (the DX7 times are returning as friend of mine says, if it doesn´t have enough knobs everybody says it´s not a good synth, but if you understand de basis of sound synthesis and make use of the software editor you could make very interesting things. The sound engine today could be a little old but it sounds like an AN1x. You can make great things with tne AN200, the softare editor and a master keyboard. Forget the pattern and program it, you will arrive to heaven with it!!!!!!. Finishing: Perhaps the half of an AN1x, the quarter of the price, sound good enough to make you remenber old synthesis days, when people used to be synthesists, not pattern players.
