The AN200 is fantastic as a synth module. Most editing can be done via the front pannel, but for complete control over all paramaters you need to use the software. I tend not to bother with the software coz I like to use it in my sitting room with a cup of tea, but even without the more indepth control it's a very versatile synth that can be very expressive.
The sequencer is only 16 step, which can be very limiting and frustrating. I bought an MMT-8 to use as a sequencer with it for live purposes, and this is proving to be a very good combination. It lets me take advantage of the 5 voice poly, which the AN200 sequ doesn't, and still leaves tracks left for some drums or other synths... but the MMT8 is another issue...
The drum sounds won't be to everyones taste, I can't stand most of them and you can't edit them too well either with is unfortunate. I would have prefered yamaha to have made the sequencer 64step and dropped the drum parts, but I'm sure some people would dissagree. This is still a remakable little box that I use very often. Another annoying thing is lack of Midi Thru - although out can be set to thru, this leaves you with out an out, which usually means more unpluging and pluging in than I would like, but then again i am very lazy when it come to wires.
I tend to use the synth for pads/evolving sounds, most hard edge stuff I do with my EA1 or some mean VSTi's, it can be very warm for a digital box - it almost matches my Juno60 for warmth with a bit of external processing/EQing, but then again I could make my fridge warm with tube distortion!
Th price has come down to �199 in the UK, which I think is a real bargin, so I would definatly recomend you check it out.

finally, if the AN200 and the EA1 had a fight, it would be a pub brawl. EA1 would start it because he thinks that AN200 has a sissy sequencer, and EA1 would also throw the first punch. AN200 would dodge the punch with a nifty side step, and follow up with some mean ninja style and kick EA1 all over the shop with lots of cool moves. EA1 (being duo timbral) would get his mate to join in and togheter they would fight AN200 untill he was in the corner of the pub with a split lip and a bust up elbow, but do not fear because this is when AN200 uses his Scene change pot to open his LPF a bit and add some cool LFO action and really start to kick arse!!! finally, MMT8 (a mate of AN200) would arrive and settle the dispute by calming everyone down and spreading peace and love by provinding enough midi for everyone in the pub and buying them all a drink.
