I realy like this synth. The sound of it is very powerfull and full of life, yet for so little money, I got mine on ebay for 175 and I consider that a steal. You can get some realy good bass and leads out of this synth. Many people complain about the limited sequencer but I have rm1x so this issue has been delt with. The sequencer on an200 is still very usefull cose I can drop it in between the tracks when i play out live and I think its perfect for that. The software editor is realy good cose you can acces some features that are not available on the front panel like three band equilizer.I very much doubt that there are a lot of synths even in the higher price range that have eq.Its also got 13 defferent effects like reverb, delay, and those major ones. All in all I am very satisfied with the price and the quality.IF something happend to it I would runn for another one, I am even thinking of getting dx200. thank you yamaha for this and especialy for the rm1x.

Dan a hobbyist user from USA writes:
IMO the Yamaha AN200 has to be considered a "best buy" VA. I use it as sound module rather than as a sequencer so I'll confine my comments to it's synth functionality. Yes, the AN200's synth section is mono-timbral but so were all the synths of the late 70's and early 80's that the AN200 mimics so well...very "analoqesque" sound for only $200. I'm a big fan of early 80's synth pop and I'm satisfied with the AN200 being capable of recreating most of the sounds for that genre as well as for current dance/techno sounds. With 5 voices and 2 oscillators the most obvious comparison for the AN200 would be with the Prophet 5. I believe that the AN200 is compatible with AN1X sysex so that would mean that a lot of patches are available on the internet. The AN200 has a different character than my other VA, (a Novation A Station that I also like a lot) - maybe a little more aggressive sound(?). I don't think that there is even any other VA hardware available in the $200 price range so the pleasant surprise of it sounding so good made it a no-brainer purchase for me.

I just bought an AN200 yesterday for $200 from Guitar Center. So far I love it. It's worth the price just as a synth expander module. I don't understand why anyone would want it rack mounted- It has lots of knobs that demand to be tweaked while your playing. Especially cool- you can morph between two "scenes" for each sound. I agree that the drum sounds are not it's strong point, but they are not bad. I haven't tried this yet, but I believe that the knobs could control a virtual synth. If so, this machine could also replace a phat boy or knobby controller.

IMHO is this machine crap. the drumsounds are unusable and it doesnt sound as good as a an1x.the an1x is much better and isnt much more expensive

Same drum sounds on both units. The an200 has some extraordinary ability in sound and getting one was a good thing for us.I have used and programmed everything from massive moog banks to computer softsynths and have really enjoyed the an200 for what it has. It is a great investment for a begginer or a decent add on for those seeking more sound modules. This proves dynamite DOES come in small packages...but watch your self it requires effort as well as intelligence to really probe into and brother- we know probes. :P

Seperate outs would be a killer feature *sigh* but hey our mixer is crowded already. I bet this module lingers a b8it in our system, we are trying to rack it up asap. get one, use it , abuse it it is more than a beat box groove deally it is a true synth and Yamaha deserves a major Kudo.
