This thing has amazing analog like sound. It screams, it squelches, it drones, it buzzes. As a groovebox its solid even if the 1 measure 4 track sequencer is a bit weak. Realtime groove control is a blast with lots of knobs and switches available for the tweaking. Even more impressive when connected to a touch sensitive midi keyboard. I definately give it a 5 out of 5!

I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing that this synth is not very well-known. It's not really in demand, so that keeps the price down (I paid $150 for mine, used), but a lot of musicians I know have either never heard of it or think it's simply a groovebox like the MC303. Unfortunately, I think that's Yamaha's fault, because they marketed this synth towards djs as a groovebox, when in fact it's a real analog-modeling synth...albeit with a single-octave keyboard that's also an x0x-style sequencer, and a collection of percussion & bass samples for beats & backing tracks. Making your own analog sounds on this and sequencing them is very straightforward, and it sounds really, really good! Sequencing the percussion samples is a bit clunky though (select what steps you want to turn on, and select a sample for each step...very slow going.), but I bought it for the synth and not the samples. Supposedly this synth does an accurate Prophet 5, and I believe it. It's also relatively easy to get this thing to imitate a TB-303, and it does it quite well. Once you get beyond making squelchy acid sounds though, there's the software editor you can use to further refine sounds. It's definitely not a synth you'll outgrow anytime soon, and it also makes a good sound module played with a midi controller or another keyboard. Very cool! Go buy one =)

Just got one yesterday and i was like wow. It's the best thing that i've ever bought and it was only $130. Sounds like An1x and is tweakable as hell. Got it set up with my RS7000 and Z1 and i think i hit a homerun gettin this. Best piece of gear i've ever had.
The patches sound great to me, just some tweakin is required. Sounds great with a keyboard, sounds are superb, editor and patches online is plus. Lots of functions in a compact box, you can literally carry it in your pocket. 10 times more powerful than Electribes, rm1xs, MCs and etc. More polyphony? Just get 2 of these or the DX. I don't know how much more can you put in such a small box. Input would be nice though. Synth engine on this blows all the other away. It's also a good drum machine.

Ok, I picked this synth up for £70 last year in mint cond and boxed with the plan of selling and making a profit, well at first I was like it's OK but nothing great I mean those presets suck but once you get the editor up and running with a download from the Yamaha web site so you can run XG works in windows XP I was like WOW. Year's and months passed and the damm thing is still here!!, first of all for all the people wanting a groove box STOP! and don’t get it... what? you heard me as a groove box it's SHIT!!! and I don't mean shit hot either, the drum sounds suck and well programming sequences is a pain in the arse unlike the Roland and Korg boxes also the seq is mono!! how lame for a poly synth if you cant sequence polyphonic parts, so with that out of the way lets look at the synh..Good news is you can disable all of it's rhythm and sequencer abilities and use it as an excelent standalone synth with a sequencer like Logic or Cubase and unlike the Electribes evreytime you hit play in your software you can disable the synth to start playing good stuff. If you make Progressive and tech house this thing is great I mean there’s phatter synths but what you will like about the AN is the fact that it will be used in every track! And fit's in the mix very well. Have a look at that editor on the PC it's amazing!! the best thing about this is the free EG you can draw with a pencil modulation and assign it to almost everything also it has a very unique sound and the Saw wave is the most unique I have ever seen when you analyse it. Great for progressive leads and pads, the unit is quite dirty sounding so something clean wouldn’t be bad to complement it I use a Nord modular and that dose the job nicely.

I have to say for the record, I was trained in synth programming on mostly roland and Korg gear. I still think roland and korg have excelent gear... However, If you can find just the now discontinued yamaha mu100 ( not the mu100r)grab an inexpensive plg card (choose your poison), slap it in and you have a serious world of fully tweakable sound. Roland tried this in the past, but there was no way to cut corners and have at least great sound. Yamaha did it right by offering cheaper sound modules. The analog synth stuff is unreal considering....
