ok compare it to X5D or N5 or similar korgs. those 2 can layer/split 8 programs/patches as 1 Combi. then in performance, u can assign 16 different combis in 16 channels, imagine. that's what I call great for gigging. use a midi interface/patchbay, u can really make 'FULL' music. 05rw,x5,x5dr,x5d,n5,n1,n364, all have no filter resonance, sucks. I think CS1x is more suitable for hard punching bass, techo stuff and hip hop. The only thing that makes me keep it is its cuteeeeeee design and colour. Soooo cute! btw, this is only a MID-RANGE synth, like N5 , X5D or even Alesis top range synth. you will get low quality sounds. Even if Alesis's DAC are good, the sounds are so boring. With HIGH-END stuff, like my SY77, the sound is so different. there's more 'thickness' quality. you get what you pay for. perfect example is Roland's endless range of digital pianos.... I use it as a controller with my sampler.

I just bought this synth a couple of months ago second hand and I love it. I know it's PCM based and everybody comlains that it's not that programmable. It is, but only if you really, really try to. I was able to pull some really nice sounds out of this box and feel that there's still alot of ground that I havn't touched. It is still PCM and limited at that so I use it primarily as an add-on. The OS is simple, but when using it with a software sequencer it becomes complex and the way the channels work seem to get confusing. Nonetheless, it's a good synth for anyone looking for nice sounds but without funds for a powerful VA or analog.

I had been wanting one of these for about 3 years. I finally got one about 2 months ago for $325.00. I just want to say thanks Yamaha for making such a great dance synth. I stopped buying Roland products about a year ago and started buying Yamaha. It's less expensive and they give you a lot more for your money. I would recommend if you like dance music.

its reasonable on its price,i bought one in 96 for $450 brand new,well,its not va,not real analog,just pcm(or yammy called it awm2)but surprisingly yammy guys programmed the awm2 shits to get some edge in the cs1x,the bass are fat tho it lost the real analog depth,the leads got edge tho it lost the real analog punch and wild.but at this price,evenn now the dropped 2nd hand price to $200 i saw above,its quite good for beginners or who don't have much cash to buy real analogs or someome like me wanna buy some cheap add-ons.ok,besides those fake analog bass and tunes(sweeps pads are also nice),the rest is totally shits i dare to say,bad os and easily jumping out of multi-program accidenally when u edit some parameters in-between the fake analog(ch1-ch4) and general midi tunes(ch5-16),so it's not so true that yammy promised us the cs1x can have fully 16ch multi combined w/ those 4-layered fake analog timbre and other general midi tunes.as a result,this is a fair good add-on synth according to its low price 'coz u can always only use the fake analog sound.i don't u only want the gm sounds when u buy this,and,well,u got a not good enough master keyboard,too.
