There's so much you can do with it provided you are into the acid-techno-dance stuff. Not the "true" analog but who cares if you can make it sound like analog. For those who don't know how or don't want to make it sound analog... don't buy it. The only thing that frustrates me the most - only one Midi Perfomance mode.

CS1x has some nice new age type sounds, and the clanger is wonderful on it. Strings are so-so, bass is pretty good, drums are weak, brass is fair, the analogue leads are suprisingly tight, but don't think that they equal the quality of a real analogue synth.For someone who is mainly concerned with laid back,beautiful type sounds. I have to give this machine a favorable rating.

All of the analog modeling or virtual analog synths should be approached with a different mindset. You have to think differently with these machines, for they are neither TRUE analog or TRUE digital, they are hybrids. What they offer is flexibility, but they lack in specialization. If you can program, even to a slight extent, you can over come that disadvantage. Now that I got that out of the way.
Yamaha has always produced some of the most reliable equipment I have ever used. And this synth is no exception to that. It is a great synth and there are no complaints about the price. I got mine for 450 bucks new, but out of box. To tell the truth, I thought it to be the best 450 dollars I have ever spent. Keep in mind you do get what you pay for. I bought this mainly for a test run, so see if I would be interested in its bigger and better brother the AN1x. I can say Yamaha sold me on both of these. Yea, you have to run around in circles to get EXACTLY what you want with some of the features. Mainly the arppeggiator, which you can work around. That is just something you must accept when buying a cheaper synth. This synth has got it where it counts and it KICKS. This synth is the best, by far, for anything else in its price range. It even surpasses some, that are priced even higher. All the blessings that this synth can bestow are well worth the slightly tedious workarounds. Besides it is working around these �limitations� that make you a better programmer in the end. There will never be a dream synth for under 12,000 American dollars. So get over it.

I give this 5 simply because of the value for money. Sure, mc303's have better arps, etc etc, but NOTHING beats this as an all purpose/starter synth for the price.
By the way.......anyone know how to switch off MIDI recieve on one channel only .....?

CS1x is the worst synthesizer I have ever had and the keyboard action is just horrible. It was a good lesson for me and I will never buy a budget synthesizer any more.
