This synth is a great synth to start out with. I use it for performance because that is what it is best at. It is lacking in its midi capablities, but it's performance sounds are excellent and it has pretty good control over the different aspects of the sound (lots of knobs, assignable wheels). I know the company likes to sell it off as a techno/dance synth, but for people that are serious about making those kinds of sounds, they are not going to buy this synth (and they shouldn't). For serious applications I think you have to treat it as a sonic tool: if you wield it properly you can do some amazing stuff with it. Though like any cheap synth on the market, this one definetly has its limits, and you do have to work it a little to get it to sound great, but if you are not performing or doing anything serious with it, its still a lot of fun to play around with, and the presets are pretty good. I certainly like it a lot more than anything that roland, alesis, or korg has put out recently (that is, stuff in the same price range). It can kick the z1 and n-series synths asses anyday.

I've used plenty of yamaha gear in the past but whoever wrote the manual for this synth was a complete moron . Even the blue book and supplied software (while free, a notable gesture )was complete shit. The cs1x however is a great board. Alot more flexibility than the manual gives credit for. The stepping in the filters and such is pretty noticable but if you make fast enough sweeps and /or saturate the hell out of the sound with fx your good to go. A fairly nice internal effects box with some crunchy distortions!

I think that for value for money this little synth has got everything you need. It's not much more in price than the cost of a home keyboard, and yet as it is so versatile ,you have a varied range of so many different and experimental sounds. I've been using my CS1X in the studio , and have been experimenting with the more 'traditional' voices you get in the multitimbral mode, thus adding a new slant to my songs. When I get together with my musician friend Gary, we use all of the 'shit hot' ambient and phat dance sounds to create our own brand of techno dance music. In particular, does anyone else love Angel st, and Icefield, as much as we do, also Morph, and Haendel, have added fresh input and depth to otherwise ordinary backing. We did a great song with Spaces, and using the CS1x was like the icing on the cake!!!!! 5 out of 5 well done Yamaha!!!!!

had to add my two cents: I won't read my resume, I own a room full of other gear that costs much more than this thing. for you newbies I offer this advice: it's a great place to start and once you get up to speed, it's a great piece to keep in your rig once you venture out into other keyboards. think of it more like food groups. the cs does some things very nicely: use it for what it does best. i think some folks are missing the point about this synth. it has a high "fun" factor. remember it's a synthesizer. it's not about it sounding better or worse than brand x. it has a unique voice all it's own. . though this thing has been sold as a techno/dance box, it's pretty versatile. we use it here for jingle/soundtrack/ stuff all day long and it's great being able to record the knob stuff in real-time.
By the way the arppegiator CAN recieve midi clock, by setting the internal tempo to "midi". and if you are new to programming, try just working with the knobs you will be suprised as to the sounds you can create by just twiddling the filter and envelope. I've enjoyed having this synth close by, it's price point miracle. trust me on this, for those of you not old enough to remember, $500 is a deal. I would of killed for one of these 15 yrs ago. when it comes to gear: trust what you hear, not what you read........

I THINK YAMAHA IS A AWSOME BIKE AND I SHOULD GET ONE FREE FOR SAYING ALL THIS GOOD STUFF ABOUT YOUR BIKES.I HAVE A FRIEND THAT HAS A YZ500 AND HE LOVES THE SHIT OUT OF IT. IF I WERE BIG ENUFF I WOULD RIDE IT BUT I HAVE TO RIDE AN YZ80. THIS IS STEVEN IRVINE AND JASON BROOKS SGHNING OFF FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNA.
