This a great retro sounding mono synth with a very different approach to programing sounds. It takes a while to figure out what works and when given that patches 1-8 have limited tweakability once they are programmed. I had mine modified with one additional LFO that I can use for pitch modulation independent of the other LFO. I also have two additional ocillators added one for osc1 and osc2 that can I can slightly detune for a really thick sound. I run mine through a Alesis Quadraverb and it really sounds nice.

I totally disagree with anyone stating that this is a good-sounding synthesizer. This particular Yamaha just like it's big brother, the CS70m, which I also owned, does not sound good at all. IT does not compare to the CS80; CS60 series. The filter on those models were set up differently and they included keyboard tracking which the CS20m lacked. Sometimes those small subtle parameters add depth to a dull sound. I am a complete Yamaha junkie...I own a DX7II, TG500, TG77, MU80, TX81Z and the software based FM7. Believe me I know what I'm talking about. I have to give credit to those who enjoy programming simple sounds, but for me if Iwere shopping for an older CS keyboard, I would definitely go with the CS15 or CS30...Yamaha didn't scrimp on the sound parameters with these babies. I think they cut corners by adding programmablity to the CS20m, CS40M & CS70. I own Reaktor by Native Instruments, they have a great virtual copy of the CS20 and CS30...if I really ever needed to have these sounds...I can call them up. Save your money, buy a computer and get Reaktor to simulate these Yamahas.

i bought mine for 2500SEK ($230) from a co-worker about 3 years ago, i still dont understand why he sold it =)

the bass you can get out from this baby is _massive_!

i recently looked for another synth since my CS-20M was getting lonely, i ended up buying a POD 2.0 instead....

if you find one... dont buy it! tell me ;)

Sorry, I WAS TOTALLY WRONG!!! This is actually an awesome sounding synthesiser, to my taste at least. It is very, very warm and smooth, and it's not true that it lacks basses. It seems that one of the line outs in my unit is broken and I get absolutely no basses from it... I had never tried the one labelled 'Lo' instead... killer bass! And I've found that this synth doesn't sound good without at least some reverb. That may be just the case with most synths, but in this case it's vital. I don't know why but without effects it sounds dull and flat... maybe it IS dull and flat, but after hearing it I don't think so, rather I think you've got to hear the sound mixed with itself in order to notice the subtle nuances in the sound. I was hearing it dry and it sounded poorly, but after adding some reverb I can say this instrument is really special... it's got Vangelis-ish sound that I really love, though it's not for everyone I reckon. Besides that, I agree with everything else in my former review.

I find this machine rather hard to mark. On one hand, it is true that you can get very good sounds from it, for instance I've got an incredibly realistic flute patch that even stands against digital synths (and real flutes), no joke... but on the other hand those sounds are the exception and not the rule. And the reason, in my opinion, is the filter. It's a so-called Variable State Filter, the kind used on early Oberheims, but being a Japanese synth it doesn't sound nearly as warm or musical as the Ob. Indeed it sounds rather dull, not particularly warm and doesn't make deep timbre changes over the raw VCOs sound. Which is a pity because it's the same filter used on the CS80, and it sounded just great there... Other than that, the rest of the machine is just OK. Not great, but OK. The oscillators are rather stable after 10 or 15 minutes, but don't sound particularly warm, either. Indeed they seem to lack depth and basses... There is only one LFO which is one of the biggest drawbacks, because it's simply not enough for complex sounds, for instance you can't have fast PWM and slow vibratos at the same time.You can mix the VCOs with a white noise source, which is nice. And you have 8 memories, but sounds can't be edited once saved. And not all parameters get programmed, so it isn't that great. In my opinion the best points in this machine are the keyboard, which is rather good, the layout, also rather good, and the construction quality. It's made like a tank (and very pretty), and may last very long if treated with care. So it's up to you. Try one and decide for yourself. I'm keeping mine for now. BTW, portamento doesn't work on mine. Any of you know where I can find the service manual or the schematics?
