I had my Yamaha DX-27 initially and picked up my CS-5 in a pawn shop for $50.00 in 1990. It rocks, to put it mildly. The CS-5 has a great analog sound that is difficult to duplicate with an FM Digital synth. It can replicate sounds reminiscent of rock bands from the late '70s and early 80s... (Wonder why that would be!? :-) )

Did I mention that it rocks? Actually, it kicks @$#...(and no patch cords to mess with!) <grin>

Toms Mulcahy a part-timer user from Ireland writes:
Great quality sounding analogue synth, if a little basic. Sweet filter, quiet VCA.

Excellent for learning analogue subtractive synthesis, as the controls are

layed out in a logical manner.

Useful multimode filter. Only one envelope, shared by VCA and VCF, which is a bit

annoying. No gate type envelope for the VCA either, like some Rolands.

Can be MIDI'd no problem with Kenton's superb Pro Solo:

http://www.kenton.co.uk

They can also provide you with a CV socket kit for controlling the filter.

There's a modification on hypereal for a VCA socket, but it's a bit pointless,

as it will effectively bypass envelope control of the VCA when you use it.

Could be useful though for MIDI control if you're processing stuff through the

audio input, or using it as a foot controlled (over MIDI) wah/volume for guitar.

Don't pay more than 150 for one though, unless you really like it.

Not exactly fat, but can produce very solid and punchy bass sounds. Also can do nice

analogue effects.

Extremely reliable and easy to service.

Great thing, if not brilliant? I still play this baby even though I'm using newer Synths at my work.
