The more I use this board, the more I like. The more I learn about creating different types of music and how to integrate this with my other tools, I like it that much more. This thing has grown and grown on me. I have figured out how to use the thing pretty well after about 9 months of owning it.
The sound quality is great. The learning curve was steep for me because this was my first keyboard, but it wasn't THAT incredibly bad. The only thing I feel that I really need to learn better is creating my own patches with the board itself and the AN card. Well... that and getting a little better in performance mode, but performance mode can be a mother sometimes.
The Good: Sound quality is great. Diverse soundset. Good waveforms to work with. Great filters. Nice Arp's. Keyboard and knob quality is very good. Using the Smart Card is actually kind of nice because you can store more stuff. FX are nice. Expansion possibilities. No huge plugs. Lots of controll. Tech support is pretty good, they called me back in one day to answer my questions.
The Bad: Steep learning curve for a beginner or someone who hasn't used yamaha keyboards. Not enough insert FX. I don't care for the way the FX are routed and work, but they are good quality. I also don't like the way the sampler works at all; IMO It's not intuitive. I don't like the LCD, but the Editor will do the trick. The software sequencer they give you with it is garbage IMO, but WHO WOULD USE IT? Get a real sequencer. The manual is horrible.
I have done full songs with this board, but I think it does much better as a complimentary tool. My suggestion would be to use this this some good software to get the most out of it. You could do whole songs with this, but that's not its strength IMO. Use this with a "real" sampler and maybe some good software, and you're ready to make some good songs.
