You don't need a non-PCI motherboard for the card, that's bull**it. You only need a "WaveBlaster" type connector on your sound card (early SoundBlaster, Terratec surely have this). What's more, the WaveBlaster connector is nothing but a common interface for MIDI, stereo audio, and VCC. So you can actually set up your DB50XG in a separate box, without using a computer at all!

The DB50XG is a small card - a bit larger than a credit card. It plugs onto another soundcard. It is called a 'daughterboard'.
It is also the best bargain in the world of midi. It was such a good bargain - SB's quit making their cards compatible with the DB50XG, because so many people were attaching them to their soundblasters.
676 patches. 21 drum kits. 3 Effects algorithms, all for $65 USD or so. If you can find a better synth - buy it. This baby is fully GM level 1 and XG compatible. Because of the DB50XG - I have committed my music to the XG format. It is a very useful tool for professional composers.

DB50 rocks... or, rather, ELECTRIFIES! It's ideal for techno and electro music, and if you hook it up to a refined Studioware panel or to an external MIDI controller, the results are quite impressing. Everything is MIDI controllable: more than 50 basic effect types with more than 10 parameters for each, unusual effects like "amplifier simulation, overdrive, early reflection, etc. MIDI control is not that easy - you have to write sysex for most parameters - but the're all realtime! Nice drumsets, the "analog" one is better than the good ol' 808, many interesting synth lead sounds. I got mine for $50, which is a good deal.

This daughterboard is quite good for the prize and for the size. But it really rocks if you use the internal QS-Voices. But you need XG-Gold to edit them. (But they give you 3000 voices..., and still you can create your own...) And then your DB50 sounds better than a $1000 Workstation. The first time after i heard a song with QS-Layervoices, i spontaneously wanted to sell my MU90. DB50 together with XG-Gold rulez!
