My DX21 I bought at the end of 1985 as being a new instrument. Since then I still use it for the well known DX-E-piano-sounds and I programmed a lot patches myself. Last week I updated my oldest synth by making the LCD backlit (I used EL-foil and EL-inverter for approx. € 10,00) !!! All the time before often I had problems to read the display within dark rooms. Now this problem has gone and the old DX21 looks a lot newer to me ! I give 4 points because now I also own an DX7 mkI I hear the diffeence between 4 and 6 op.

I bought one off Ebay back in August in great condition. I had put it away for Christmas. I have it out now and it's great. It reminds me of my old DX7s, which I sold a few years ago. :( I bought it for two reasons. 1) I wanted to get an FM synthesizer to add to my collection and to try to learn how to program an FM synth. 2) Most important: The Electric Piano sound. The "NewElectro" and "HighTines" sounds on this synth alone are worth owning the DX21. Just turn the Chorus function "on" and you got the most famous sound from the mid 80's. I can't duplicate that sound on any of my other synths. I can come close, but it just not the same. The DX7s "FullTines" is perfect. The DX21's is very close to that one. Anyway, besides the electric piano sounds, this synth is capable of some other nice sounds. Bass sounds and FX are really good. Just don't expect a realistic piano or full strings. That's why I have a Korg too. This is a perfect synth for someone looking for a second synth. I wouldn't have this as my only synth. The DX21 compliments my other synths. Also, the secondhand prices are really good on this synth. I wanted to buy a DX7, but I was able to get the DX21 for about $200 cheaper than a DX7. I'm giving the DX21 a rating of 5, because the Electric Piano sound is the best!

Just picked this one up on Ebay for $60 a month ago. It's my first FM synth and of course I can't program it, other than the stuff in the Functions section, and setting up performance setups and general shit like that. Without exception my Chorus is ALWAYS ON. I've got a shitload of patches that I downloaded (over 1000) and I just bulk-dump them into the synth. The only thing I don't guessed it..the non velocity keyboard. I'll give it 4 for the cheap price and the fact that it is in awesome shape.
