This is one of the greatest synthesizers of al time! its in my personal top 10 of the greatest synthesizers of al time,many standard FM preset sounds do this device not the justice it really deserves,go programming yourself or tweak the internal presets(card(s)to)going deep in this awesome synthesizer you wil find the tru power of it,some people or persons who complain about the sound of this synth. are not musicians or creative minds,they are just poor listeners and often they compare it with other synths,there is no need for that,every synth. has a place in the sonic world of electronic music! I stil can not believe they go cheap second hand,even today,but in future this synths wil find the tru vintage status wich they trully deserve:AWESOME SYNTHESIZER!!!

ALONG WITH MY ROLAND D-50,KORG T-3,KAWAI K-4,YAMAHA DX-7 IS ALL TIME CLASSIC.SOUNDS HAVE A SOUL AND CHARACTER.YAMMY SOUNDS ARE SO FULL OF LIFE BECAUSE SHE GENERATES SOUNDS FROM SINE WAVES.NO THOUSAND CHEAP SAMPLED SOUNDS,ONLY 64 KILLER.IN THE MIX DX-7 2 ALWAYS GIVE SOMETHING SPECIAL.IDEAL FOR LEADS,STRINGS,DARK PADS,MELLOW EL.PIANOS,HAMMONDS AND PERCUSIVE SOUNDS.PROGRAMMING IS HARD BUT STLL WORTH THE FINAL RESULT.MOST CHANGES IN SOUND GIVE YOU FIRST OSCCILATOR.EVERY TIME I PLAYED SOME NEW SINTH I LOVE MORE AND MORE MY YAMMY DX-7,ROLAND D-50,KAWAI K-4 AND KORG T-3.THIS OLD GEAR HAVE MORE BALLS,VIBES AND KICKS THAN ANYTHING $$$$$$NEW.END OF STORY.LONG LIVE PROGRESSIVE ROCK ALL AROUND THE WORLD AND THE GROUP GENESIS.

In response to Jason who thinks the DX7II is lame and went as far as donating his to the salvation army. That really hurt. Wish I knew which salvation army so I could have bought it. I respect your side by side comparisons to boards of today including an old board like the D50. But here's what you probably would never understand kid. The DX7II is a classic legend. Just like a 57 Chevy is a classic and not to be compared to a new spaceship like equipped Honda civic. The DX7II is the reason today's boards have zillions of sounds. You see, the DX7 was the inspiration for it all and that is why it is remembered and appreciated by old fogies like myself who witnessed that amazing launch that set the synth world on fire. Also it is still very useful if you know how to shred on keyboards. Someone talk some sense into this kid. What he did is downright ignorant putting the DX7 down like that. The DX RULES!!!

I Recently bought a DX7IIFD for 200.00 because it's supposed to be an amazing vintage synth. After spending a month playing, programming and hearing about 1600 sounds from the dozens of disks I got with the purchase I've come to a conclusion. I compared it side by side with my TR88, Roland D50 and a few other keyboards (I own 6 keyboards). By today's standards the DX7II is fairly outdated and not much fun to play. The piano and string sounds are especially lame and that fulltines sound has been taken to way more expressive and refreshing new levels in today's keyboards. This keyboard sounds so dry and uninspiring as a standalone unit and it's no wonder The Roland D50 kicked its ass 10 times over. Now there's a truly useful board that truly competes in terms of sound till this very day. Sorry folks but The DX7II sounds so pathetic I do not recommend it and I just gave mine away to the salvation army.

I finally got my hands on a DX7IIFD in great condition for a decent price. For the first time I compared this 1987 synth side by side with my 1997 Roland XP80 and found it to have sounds that in some cases rival those in my XP. Either the DX7II was ahead of its time or some keyboards just never caught up to it. Let me say that the capacity in sound structure on this board is powerful and uniquely expressive. This board is extremely useful and has a lot of bite. I cannot believe the sounds this thing generates. FM never went away. Now off I go to find my other favorite beast....the Roland D50
