I have this one and it is very nice in terms of keyboard action and physical build.It is all metal with plastic ends and plastic neck.The keyboard action is a mini version of the DX7 action without the lead weights in them.I know this because I took it apart to see.It has monochanel aftertouch and velocity response.It has a METAL keybed like most pro yamahas of the day.It is solid and nice to play!

I have used the KX-5 regularly for years playing rock keyboards. It is very nice to be able to get out from behind the keyboards and move with the guitar players.
The small keys took some getting used to, but the samll keys mean it is a smaller unit- lighter, easier to hold. The ribbon is great and the modulation works well. The velocity of the keys is good.
I used it so much that I bought a second one (one black, one silver- we play a lot and all the gear takes a beating) and I use it exclusively wireless (trans midi plus a Nady 101 and lots of velcro). It is pretty sturdy- I have held it up over my head by the stem (with the left hand) and played it with the right. It can be played with two hands in a pinch, but mostly it works well for solos.
Lots of fun.

I LOVE this thing! I bought mine used off EBAY for $250 plus s&h. I've seen them cheaper there.. but without a case.. which mine came with ..as well as a midi cable. I'm basically a guitar player turned keyboardist (about a year ago) ..so this "takes me back home" to "nearly" the feel of a guitarist. The weight is about that of a standard Les Paul. Being able to move around is so much more fun than standing behind a keyboard all night. The only drawback is the "right handed-ness" of it. Except for the pitch bend ribbon - sustain - volume - & modulation features for the left hand.. the L.H. is pretty useless otherwise. (Although I do sometimes use the L.H. for voice selections when I need to "hold" a note or chord with the right hand.)

I got one of these things for $150 bucks. Yamaha mailed me a manual for free, though its not needed. It can access up to 64 sound/programs remotely (33 -64 require you to hold down the sustain button). It can't send program changes to access multiple banks, or I can't figure out how. It has a cool ribbon controler, mod wheel and volume. It also sends sostunato and can play in POLY or MONO. It's a great tool if you do vocals and play synth leads, like I do in my industrial band. It can transmit on MIDI channel 1 & 2, which lets you access two MIDI rigs at a time! Put a sampler on one channel and your lead module/synth on the other and bam! go from noise to melody. Why fake playing guitar when you can strap on one of these. My only complaint is a one bank limit, you cant load or sart a sequncer via MIDI, and no track display.
