The PSR 550 is a performer's dream board. while many of the presets are sort of cheesy it does have some great ones and the capacity to attain some amazingly thick sounds when mixed correctly. It has awesome electric pianos which sound better when layered and mixed with chorus and effects. The piano sounds are decent and this keyboard is truly up there with the best of them. It is a well kept secret as most people would not think it is a serious machine at first glance because it sort of looks like a cheap portable casio type keyboard but it is in fact a monster . You can actually layer two sounds on the right side of the keyboard while simultanously having a single sound on the left side and you can determine the split points. You can also program your 4 favorite performances and save to disk and recall in real time on the fly while performing. I know of no other synth to date that allows you to have performance presets saved to be able to recall at the touch of one button rather than scrolling thru endless menus and fussing with jog dial wheels. This keyboard is AMAZING !!!! and I will never part with it !!!

although this keyboard has no sound editing capability other than being able to layer and split sounds it butts heads with ones costing 4 times its price in terms of sound quality. the built in chorus allows you to thicken sounds and make them very thick. if you've ever considered owning that classic monster dx7II look no further than this keyboard as it outweighs the DX with better rhodes sounds (and better sounds period) and built in quality effects. The board also allows you to program your desired performances and save and recall them on the fly by pressing a single button. I have performed for all types of events (including sports events) with this board and people are always amazed at the sounds coming out of this thing. You can even program any rhythm you can dream up. I've programmed killer songo and merengue rhythms which are saved onto disk. Yamaha has created one of the all time greatest but they disguised it for the poor man's benefit. Every serious live performer and studio would seriously benefit from this board. I've owned most of the heavy hitters and this one is the one that keeps me up all night.

I have owned many synths. My current setup is a Roland xp80 and a motif rack. My other secret weapon which I will keep forever is the PSR 550. at first glance it looks like a cheap casio portable with fancier buttons but this keyboard is a relatively undiscovered monster and the only keyboard which produces very convincing DX7 Rhodes sounds coupled with the added benefit of built in effects. You can actually program and save any complex rythm you can dream up. I have created amazing merengue and songo rhytms on this board and everytime I've played live people have been very surprised by the sounds that come out of this board. It is capable of layering and splitting sounds. I have never used the built in sequencer because I prefer the one on my xp80 but soundwise this board to me is more useful than the Korg M1. There is an excellent assortment of electric piano sounds that can be combined in any way and will rival Yamaha's own DX7II. The piano sounds are fair although the keys on this board actually feel like cheap low quality. But overall I must say this is a performer's keyboard and you can't go wrong in owning one.
