I got mine as a kid and still have it.Its the first keyboard I ever owned. I remember thinking it was so cool cuz it had 100 sounds. The reviewer is right...I love the funny sounds like leaf spring and comet and babydoll. I also dig #43 Strings. A great cheap cheezy poppy keyboard. I Like the auto-accompianment. I used to make breakbeats by setting a fast samba or disco rhythm and holding down the fill button. I, too wonder if anyones ever modded one.

It's nice to see the Portasound line getting some recognition. The PSS-170 was one of many of these cheap boxes I had on my quest for creating music. It had 100 sounds, my fave being the bass and leaf spring. At the time I got it , I thought it was a great deal , considering that it's bigger brothers and DX-7 cost considerable more. I would still have it if I had not given it to my little brother , who in turn smashed it to pieces. A quick question ? Is anyone out there modding these type of boxes ?

eh, I don't know. Not great, you probably wouldn't want to do any lead stuff w/it, but I've used it successfully at shows. None of the instruments sound quite like what they're supposed to represent. BUT-- sine wave, leaf spring, and bagpipe voices sound GREAT when run thru a flange pedal. I'm sure that violates some sort of synth protocol, but works for me.
