klaus...thanks for the comments...i'm not worried about the bad reviews, i just wanted a complete run down on the problems...actually i own two standalone sequencers: a rm1x and an asq10 (now obsolete) + some grooveboxes. i think i will buy the rs7k...i'm just going to let the os settle a bit longer...i have played with it in the store and it seemed fine...not like the xl/mp-7s which seemed to hesitate between programs and applying certain tweaks (which i don't remember now)on the fly...perhaps, in a year or two, all of these new boxes will reach some state of near perfection (it would be wonderful to hear the other tracks in grid mode--can't believe they didn't fix this going from the rm1x)...by then, though, roland will have the mc909 out!

"(a) Yamaha breaks up its development teams, for specific products, after release which prevents follow up mods and problem corrections via new OS releases" Yup. It seems like this. But this came out of a source on www.motifator.com and not from Yamaha Japan directly so we dont know this for sure. Maybe it is like this, maybe not.
"(unlike say Access)" Access is also a MUCH smaller company which doesnt have several developer teams. I would say even the owner is working in the development. Plus Access didnt made a hardware sequencer so far. If you look around on the market, except the new MPC4000 and the RM1x (well maybe the QY700) there is no other product that offers such a easy to use User Interface. There is NOTHING else out there. And the way the RS is right now, it works stable and reliable, and does what Yamaha says. Sure there are design quirks, but show me a modern music instrument that does not.
" and (b) upgrades, when done in the past, were done via EPROM." Yup. The RS does it via a datafile, means the RS has like a Virus or a Q, Flash-PROMs.
"How does rs7k OS v1.14 get delivered" As a zipped file, which you unzip, put it on a SmartMediaCard and boot your RS with that card. Voila, OS 1.14 is in your system. But the RS7000 that are now on stock have this OS anyway.
Astro, dont listen too much what it says bad things about this tool. Go to a store and try it for yourself. If possible borrow it for a few days and then do your decision. Most people here, who posted negative reviews never really worked with it. As i already said earlier, if you dont like software-sequencer, this might be a very good alternative for you. Also there are other hardware sequencer out there, worth to check if you dont need all that extra, the RS comes with. RM1x, QY700, MC80, MMT8 etc.pp. Oh yes and that drumsampler with the built-in drum-sequencer, MPC2k, or if you have too much money, MPC4k.

"Over on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RS7000/ there's a thread on 'the step grid problem.' Anybody know about this?" Ask the people there. The "Grid Step Problem" is not a problem its jsut simply the fact that you cant hear other tracks when you are in Grid Step Recording mode. In other record-mode this problem doesnt exist.
" How bad is it?" Its not life threathening. :)
" rs7k seems to have certain midi recording problems too." Where? There are no MIDI Recording problems anymore since OS v1.14. The only problem that was there with the old OS v1.12 was that MIDI-Data still got routed to MIDI-B, even if you turned it of in the MIDI-setup-page. That bug is fixed.
"There's also some talk about Yamaha not releasing OS mods in any coherent way. If that's the case, how will these problems get fixed." These problem are either way no problems, or already fixed with the last OS-update.
