One thing: this box looks like it was circuit bent in the factory by default. Yes it does most of the things circuit benders usually look for. It can transpose sample pitch by 2 octaves up & down, reverse samples on the fly (has a special button for it), spread a single sample to 12 buttons use it like a keyboard with a custom tuning, has a 4-stage envelope as well as kinda pitch envelope for sounds that resemble laser beams, detuned cups, etc. Also, other drum machine loops its drum samples? Could sound really crazy. Imagine a 3-second looped snare, pitch slowly falling down to -2 octaves. Also the 12-bit grittiness really shows its teeth at lower pitches. Guys from Yamaha really didn't care about keeping things in the beaten track. As for drum programing, you can edit pitch, envelope, reverse setting for each individual hit, enough said. You can quantize or not quantize at all, swing, chain patterns etc. Youhave the drum mixer for insane tweaking. Pads are very responsive although not velocity sensitive. Optional cartridges make a fine completion but the default ROM is the most useful IMO. Poor sysex, dump only. Noticeably big.

If you do not have the RX -5, sell your shirt and get one, pronto. For the money it will place you at the top of your game. You will be simply mesmorized with the Latin beats. SO much there to work with.

The Latin Cartridge I have is great! I haven't made a lot of use of my RX5, but its percussive sounds are quite real and solid.

I have used the RX 5 for sixteen years(yes.. since 1989!)(posted 11/05)This machine has produced more work for me and has taken me to more places than I ever dreamed of! All I wanted was something for a little backup, instead I got myself a three piece band that rivals some bands in my area, with out the aggervation and heartach of working with other people. I'm on my third RX 5, nicknamed "Flash", and my only copmplaint is the memory cartridges I have are breaking down from use. I change the batteries but they stiill don't work. Any advice on a inexpensive repair of the cartridge. I downloaded my programmed songs onto mini disc in case of loss. I have not figured how to download the the electronic signal like those of the cassett. Please E-mail me with RX 5 in the title! Thanks, Dan

The best drum machine of ALLTIME bar none. This machine is awesome. Number 1 you,re 24 pads to play with. Hell even an MPC3000 doesn't have that. Then you've the 12 bit punch and body of the classic samples. That can be edited and spread across the pads. And the editing is what sets this machine apart. You tune down a sample and you have a whole new sound. Then you've the great latin sound cartridge which is gold-dust to get hold of. But has killer samples on it. And make the RX5 TALK. This is the greatest drum machine EVER. Its criminal how underatted they're, but that means you can get the best cheap. Get one.
