This is a great secondary percussion module and wonderful for programming rhythms which can be stored as MIDI on a sequencer or computer. The kicks have no bottom and the snare no bite, but the rest of the sounds are good.
You can edit the sounds under the "Voice Edit" or effects features, but your control is somewhat limited. You can also layer sounds for interesting results, but it's limited by the small amount of memory. There are a few DX7 instrument sounds available such as guitars, horns, brass, etc.
Songs are written by writing patterns and then chaining them. You can also chain songs to make a complete set for performance, but the memory limitations really don't allow you to store more than four songs if you want your patterns to be more than the bare-bones basics.
The cassette-record cable connecter is essential if you're going to be able to keep what you've written. The cable has three plugs, one for storing, one for reading/verifying, and I have no idea what the third plug does.
Paradoxically, you will have better results storing to cassette than computer, and storing to a crummy normal bias cassette over a CR02 tape. It is -highly- recommended that you verify whatever you store.
Oh yes, programming or writing on this machine is very, very tedious. It's not for the impatient.
