I just returned from vacation and while away I ventured into the local Guitar Center. Amazing store. Blew me away with the amount of instruments they had in stock. I made my way to the keyboard dept. and was equally amazed at the up to date inventory that was before me. I've always been a Yamaha fan, so I took a seat at the new 88 keyed Motif. Amazing. I could have sat there for hours and played. It is inspirational to say the least. But when I returned home, and fired up my old SY77, I was equally inspired. The fullness of this keyboard, in my opinion has not been surpassed. It still inspires me to create. I have had to repair the disk drive a few times, but it is still worth it. I don't think I'll ever give it up.

I bought my SY77 used a few weeks back as I was lloking for a 61 key keyboard with Yamaha's FS keybed, which the SY77 has. Great feel!! I reall would like to get nothing more than pads and organs out of it. I knew pads would be no problem since it was FM based. I did not know however how GREAT this would be for creating B3 sounds. I'm starting of simple. I pick alogrithm 45 (no FM going on) and each operator is then capable of acting like one drawbar from a Hammond. Like to get 088000000 for example, I need only two ops, each using a simple sine wave. One with a freq of 1.5 and one at 1. Just set both outputs at 127.... boom. it's that simple. Oh put I didn't stop there. For the 1st and 9th drawbars, they actually need to ops each so that the "foldback" can be programmed. This is done by limiting the key range with output scaling. Also I created percussion effect by adding an op with a freq of 1.5 (2nd harmonic) or 2 (3rd harmonic) just change the EG so it pops anf decays right away... I added my Boss RT-20 rotary pedal... and I am extremely impressed with my B3 sounds. EXTREMELY. I wonder why others haven't dived in deep on FM to emulate Hammond organs... I will keep at it a refine my Hammond sounds. So this box is now giving me great organs, pads and of course electric FM pianos. Flutes and Clarinets are wonderful too. My backlit display is fading and I haven't even tried the disk drive. I don't use this for sequencing and I use a pc editor/librarian so I really don't need the disk drive... Anywya I give this keyboard a 4 out of 5... and to me thats a high mark. I reserve 5 out of 5 for maybe the Yamaha Motif XS :)

SYCreep a hobbyist user from The Netherlands writes:
Amazing synthesizer,in begin when you start discovering it you think this synth is ok but no more, but after some months of being the owner and using it a lot,it really getting going very strong;this is for me one of the best synthesizers of al time, its in my personal top 20,a have a original DX7,this SY77 is thousends of miles ahead, and again under the "hood" of these SY77 is a complete YAMAHA DX7 MarkII !! So it is much, much more as an simple rompler!,very deep tweaking is possible and very easy with the big display,so the combinating of FM synthese, analog synthese, the waveforms, the sequencer(a bit underpowered these days)makes these Yamaha a great synthesizer!

+ FM synthese, analog filters, built like a tank, reliable, xtra outputs, easy editing, large backlight display, excellent keyboard very very good ofcurse with velocity and aftertouch,2hand these SY's go cheap today!

- drumkits sounds very weak and dul, floppy disk drive can fail or is weak quality

despite the -'s,i give 5 stars, they go cheap 2hands today, this is a quality product of a very high standard!

Corey a professional user from Seattle, Wa writes:
I learned MIDI, sequencing and synthesis on an SY77 in college, and I'm glad I did. It's brought me back, these years later to pick up one of these guys on Ebay. It is, simply put, an immensely powerful synthesizer. Better FM implementation than the famous DX7, entirely usable samples, and very nice filters. The keyboard action is stellar, and it's surprisingly easy to use, despite hailing from the dark ages of synth UI design. I'm glad I was able to find one again.
