The used price of these seems to be going up suddenly. It looks like FM synthesis is making a minor comeback.
The TX802's sound is professional quality, clear, and strong - really no comparison to NI's FM7 softsynth. (The FM7 isn't bad, but compared side by side, the 802 is the real deal.)
The preset "Performances" (as Yamaha called its patches) are nice - classic DX7 electric piano, strings, etc. The difficulty in programming myth largely stems from the early digital age when the whole concept of programming scared most people. With a few reads of the manual, and browsing through user groups, I figured out how to load voice patches from the computer. Now the possibilities of sounds are almost endless.
18 years old and this is still a great synth. Also, kudos to Yamaha for putting all of their user manuals online.
