A true digital synthesizer when coupled with a computer for editing. A joy to play and the sound is big, big, big. After owning four TX7 and the TX802, I prefer the 816. It is easier to manage than 4 separate TX7s and has more polyphony than a single 802. I suppose eight 802s would be cool, and they can be stacked to share polyphony if I remember correctly, but at today's prices, that would still cost you more than a single 816 (and it would take a lot more rack space!) The converters on the 802 are cleaner, but the 816 packs a warm punch. I'm running all the outs into a Niche MIDI mixer which gives you the ability to control the volume of each module via MIDI. Alternatively, running thru a Soundcraft 200 8 channel board also lends a great sound. I find I seldom need external efx because you can create your own in a single TF1 module to add to the overall sound. I use all TF1s as a single sound. MIDI the 816 with analog (I really like it stacked with a Super Jupiter) and you've got the real deal. Just changing the velocity curves on your MIDI controller drastically changes the overall timbre without even using a computer to edit. FM is very sensitive to velocity and aftertouch- extremely responsive. You just can't get this with hardware sample playback synths. Although the Giga libraries are on par, but hey, the 816 is from the mid 80's!
The plug-in FM stuff is very cool and convenient, but the sound is just too thin for my taste. By the way, there is much more to FM than just digital piano sounds...

This is one of the great synth modules of all time. Yes, it's massive. It looks great with the lights switched off as well. You can program it from a DX7 which is what a lot of guys will do. The sound is much cleaner than on a 7. A bastard to work with, but what modular is. This is the ulimate DX modular unit. Prices vary. I recently got a way above normal price for one. People want and are willing to pay.

TX816 has sat my studio for 15 years now and I found it the best FM generator. Amazing specs. Check it out.

I just found the final four TF-1's to populate my TX rack so as of today, I'm the proud owner of an 816 setup. I've used them for years but never owned one until now. It's never too late friends, this is (still) the coolest FM unit alive. Now if I can just find a good OSX patch editor for it. Any ideas out there? I discovered the TX-816 during the time when composer Teja Bell and Mahavishnu violinist Steven Kindler were doing great new age music with them. Saw Don Lewis, Gary Luenberger and Herbie Hancock do the original demos for them. Awesome. Man, I gotta go and play with it some more.....=-) ..later, Thanks for the forum.

Simply the king of fm. The prices have tumbled over the last few years. They were once as expensive as a DX1, which is a minno by comparisson. The sounds are awesome in any mode. With the right programmer, this is an fm modular.
