The FB01 is a useful little box provided you program your own sounds & aren't looking for realism. Very good at avant-gardeish strange sounds.

Unfortunately, it's loaded with junky presets, and there are only two banks of 48 user voices, which is a little awkward. Nonetheless, it's a great value at the dirt-cheap prices they're going at.

You can hear the FB01 here:

Look for the piece "outpost". It uses some FB01 patches I made.

This is a fun little box, so long as you give up any idea of doing realistic sounds w/it, and you're prepared to do some editing. (The presets are almost entirely junk.) Most useful for avant garde weirdness.

I wish Yamaha had given more user memory and less of the anemic presets on this. A fun box, can be had dirt cheap these days.

You can hear the FB01 (w/external processing) here:

look for the piece "outpost", it makes use of a few FB01 sound I've created.

FB01s come cheap, as nobody wants them, why is that? True, the presets suck, positively, you WILL need an editor to get something out of it. The MIDI delay is a major pain in the ass(I am almost invariably forced to extend notes several ticks to give the FB01 time to think, and we are not talking here about 300 BPMs...), the alias noise obvious...

Still, for certain FM-type sounds (the generous 4 ops, goddamit)and messed with other types of timbres, a very good addition. I own two units, which I use occasionally, and for some reason, I will not get ride of these boxes(the low market value being not the main reason!)

Utterly useless at realistic sounds, and 95% of the presets suck. No dynamic voice allocation, and a little bit too much noise in the D/A converters.

Plusses: Get a computer and program this. Great sounds are possible, especially of the weird, clangorous inharmonic types. It's the best deal on a 4 op Yammy, fits in a little tiny cubbyhole, is multitimbral, and kicks all kinds of ass once you get used to it. I find the best way to use it is as 2 independent synths, each panned hard left/right to individual processing. (No stereo info of worth on the FB.)

At the price they go for, you'd be foolish to pass one up.
