Before this unit, all I ever had was a hybrid K3 synth... I'd really only been exposed to analogue synthesis when I wasn't making my sample-based MOD files... Turns out a lot of my favorite instruments in those files were done on a machine just like this one, the TX-81z. Man, the velocity on the K3 didn't really do much to the sounds on the K3, but when I play my TQ-5 from that keyboard, it really comes alive! From subtle rumblings to outright clanks, this makes some wild alien percussive scronchy bass! I still don't quite have FM programming down, though it's a bit easier thanks to some PC based TX81z editors. I don't know WHAT i'd do if I had to program from the front panel. Hey, anyone know which waves are what? I mean, the manual, the editors, etc. list them simply as waves 1-7. How handy is that when I want a resonant sawtooth bass thang going. I haven't even begun to delve into the immense possibilities of this beastie. Makes me wonder why everyone's gotta dis digital synths. Digital emulation of analogue, now that's stupid, but FM really is a sound you must have somewhere.

If you need screeching industrial noise, look no further! This thing is a hardcore headfuck machine! This thing is capable of some serious ear-splitting-digital-garbage noises that will rock your world and tear your speakers to shreads! Welcome to Da Futcha!

No onboard keys, so step-time editing requires an external keyboard. Ah! No loop mode a la MMT8 Some of the FM sounds are gorgeous and provide quite a contrast to GM tone modules. Those basses are deep! It's a brilliant little box for sketching out ideas. Sequencing (its main function) is a breeze. The presets can be really mangled and stored as user voices - a real bonus. It has a lovely bright display for 'in the dark' use and it's so robust. I've already dropped mine a few times! Definitely, a used box when I need to get away from the computer.

Don't discount the potential of the little grey box - its a secret weapon!

Ok for a cheap supply of FM sounds, and a sequencer too boot! Adds a bit of extra colour to all those sampled sounds.
Anybody got a PC editor? Would be useful for storage of sounds.
