I bought a VL1M (version 1) off eBay a couple weeks ago. Beforehand I had obtained the V2 EPROM chips and performed the upgrade myself upon receiving the instrument. I play it from a WX7 wind controller. The imitative acoustic sounds, when triggered from the WX7, make keyboard synth sounds seem like toys. I also have a Alesis QS8, which has some very nice solo violin, solo brass and woodwind sounds (or so I thought before the VL1M arrived). Next to the VL1M, they are unacceptable.

It's great! There's nothing else even close.

Please note that Martin Tauchen's rating was clearly meant to be a "5" instead of a "1". An easy mistake, but with only three reviews posted, it brought down the overall rating of this amazing synth quite a bit. In my view this is still the greatest synth EVER, due to its organic character and endless possibilities. But then, I'm originally a woodwind player, so I've always preferred instruments that interact with every nuance of expression possible.

The last real milestone in synthesizer history since the introduction of the DX7. Congratulations Yamaha!!! Words are helpless to describe the VL1. Hear it yourself.

The Vl1m is a beast ! eventhough only mono/duo- phonic it is the first great synth, wich plays like the playing I feed in.Parameters can be controled like through a real "acoustic"instrument. But there is more.Starting from the preprogrammed acoustic models, the sound changes not totally but subtle. And always combined with the realtime reaction of the controllers. Use it over Midiguitar or with WX or Breathcontrollers, the sound will never be the same. Sound quality is fine, the difference to static ROMplers/Samplers is amazing. This is really an instrument wich reacts also significant to my missbehaviour on the instrument. No sampled "acoustic" can reach this dimensions. Eventhough the difference is more subtile, but the difference is hearable. Not really a traditional synth, but blown up with possibilities wich are going far over the "traditional" synthesis. My number one for Midiguitar and Live-events. The most musical synth on earth.
