The other reviews say all that needs to be said, really. I just cannot resist reiterating something that one of the other reviewers said: this synthesizer is so, so ugly that I actually feel repelled when I approach to play it! Thank God for the huge volume control dial - it calls attention to itself and takes my eyes away from the horrible triangular buttons and the awkward mix of dull yellow and pastel-lavender colors scattered across it's don't-show-yourself-in-public face. Anybody want mine? This is definitely the main attraction, the anaesthetic cosmetic nightmare, of any musical instrument freak show. This is just one of the risks of buying via internet!

4 Operator 8 algorithm dx synth, so not realistic, but can make some fat, bad basses and weird sound. My first synth. Not good at imitating acoustical instruments like piano, but the bass sounds and the electric piano are nice. Effects are quite good, the keyboard is excellent, pity it lacks aftertouch. Nice design. Good display.

Quite a good option if you're after a FM synth, this. It's the more basic 4-op version of FM, but in the later incarnation which allows you to use a selection of waves for each operator rather than just sine waves (like the DX11 ot TX81z). The YS100 has a big plus over the DX11/TX81z though in the added effects. Since the main criticism of FM sounds is that they're too thin and clinical, adding effects really makes a big difference to the sounds. There are two downsides. One is that you can't program it fully from the synth itself, you need a PC editor (plenty available on the net). Although frankly that's a better way of doing it anyway. The other is that this is almost certainly the ugliest synth ever produced. If you can live with that, go for it (it does have the bonus effect of making them very cheap...).
