guy who does beats: Well, if the DX7 is too much machine for you, do stay from anything else that's complicated, like Csound, or perhaps a violin. With all that time you've saved not being an "egghead", you think you would have learned to spell.
Now on to the review: the DX27 came in two flavours when it was released, the ordinary 27 and the 27s, which had speakers built in to it. (!)
It's a 4op FM synth, and not the best one either. (That honour, such as it is, would go to the DX9, for its superior envelope generators.) It is also limited (like a lot of the 4ops) by limiting the C:M ratios you can pick to a preset list.
What it's good for: typical FM things, weird noises, bells, elec. piano and similar.
Everyone should have an FM box in the arsenal of toys, and at the price these things go for, why not? Just don't pay more than $100 for it, and don't expect it to be a triton or a motif. It is a limited FM box from the 80s, no more, no less.

i've used everything from an sh-101 to a micromoog and the dx-7 is just too much masheen for me.all i end up making are bells and whistles totlly lame synth, for eggheads not real musicinas.peace out.

I recently bought one off EBAY in perfect condition with orignal box and manuals. I already have a TX81z which I like so I thought since the DX27 was compatible it would be a cool addition. WRONG! I think my expectations were far too high. It's nowhere near as versitile as the TX. I've tried the presets in a mix but they just don't cut it. Some of the bass sounds are good but for more complex sounds, forget it. I wouldn't say that its a good synth even as a second synth. For beginners then I hear you say. Only if you want to disillusion them. FM has always been hard to program and the results are generally disappointing. The DX7 is the only real option for FM. I've always thought that 4 operator synths are no match against Casio's Phase Distortion CZ range. I've got 2 Casio CZ-1 synths which are vastly superior to the DX. It's up for sale!! Who's got a DX7?

Way cool machine. It's incredibly cheap compared to the DX7, but offers the same FM sound characteristics -only a little thinner. It's indeed very easy to program and is extremely reliable. I got mine in 1986 and i although i wasn't really nice to it, it's still perfect and never let me down. Downsides could be the fact that it's not multitimbral or the cheap keyboard -which has no velocity. The sounds have a velocity parameter though; or you can also use the odd breath control device with this true oldskool synth. It is stereo and has MIDI thru so it is a fine addition in any studio setup. It's too cheap secondhand. Buy one!!!

I saw one of these at a Pawn shop for way too much ($159) yesterday. I found to be pretty easy to program as for as single slider synths go. In fact, i turned quite a few heads creating some heavenly 4 operator FM sounds. Not as flexible or as powerful as the DX-7 by any means. But, easy to use (if you know what you're doing), portable, cheap, and yeah...
