A cheap, but usable synth. Has some great bass and bell sounds, and can create some really odd, and weird SFX, but that's about it. Programing is a bitch, although once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier, and can result in some excelent sounds, which is the high point of this synth. Contrary to most other people, I though that the orchestra voices where just like most other presets: Crappy, although Some preset SFX are okay (LFO Noise, Synballs). However, at it's price, this might be something good to have around, if your willing to fork over 100+ dollars for it.

Picked one up a couple of years ago. It can certainly do things other synths cannot, but it is of pretty specialised use since it either sounds lifeless or metallic; often both.
Quite fun to have about (and beautifully made compared to modern products), but I can't use mine for long without getting a headache...and i mean that!

I picked one up about a month ago, and I found it usefull for certain things. I also use it in conjunction with my electribe ea-1 (with the gating), and can create some really odd sounds. Very unique. All in all it's not that difficult to program, just takes a different mindset from analoge subtractive because it's somewhat additive. Very good for noise! Especially for that semi-old school industrial noise stuff. It's a good addition for the $.

Back when they came out in 4th grade, I got a DX27s (s for speakers on the side and has an optional chorus feature built in) and my brother got the regular DX27. High points: weird ass sounds from who knows what planet, modern 80's sounding electric pianos, some cheese organs, noisy ass sounds, bright brass (cheese though)and anything metalic sounding this thing is great with. It is sterile, raspy and shrill no doubt, and couldn't get ANYTHING close to a piano. If you are looking for a smashing lead keyboard, this isn't it. To be honest, I'm waiting for some creative person to find a new style of music that would be creative enough to accept the DX sound. The only time I have heard it in a song is in LTJ Bukem's "Atlantis," which is a jungle track from the UK that has the "MARS TO ???" voice in it (if you've heard the track, it's the one little sound every once in a while that sounds like some little high pitched plink that seems to echo quickly away). If you are a person who likes the very metallic 80's electric piano sound and don't want to spend a lot on a DX7 or something else, this one makes great EP's in that style of timbre (this is no joke!). I learned how to program on this beginning in the 4th grade, and it's funky (see, after having this as my 1st, all the analogue's with the million dials on the front are so simple). I really don't value it more than $100 compared to a lot of other synths out there.

THis is one of the grungeist and bassiest digital engines you could pick up for not very much. It also makes eautiful bells and strange noises. As far as I'm concerned absolutely piss easy to program, only four oscillators and simpl editing. Robert Orom obviously has little imagination with sound editing. I use mine for LIVE minmal techno and it rocks as my primary bass machine. By the way the engine is touch sensitive so you can use that in sequencing and get some very interesting tweaks by playing with the mod wheel programming. Yeah factory patches are pretty cheesy but with some editing you can get some seriously good sounds and who wants to use factory presets anyway, you just end up sounding like preformed crap. Well thats my bit, I love it and will never sell it.
