How do you make the robot voice? (30-Aug-01 03:00PM
)
- You know the one... like the Daleks in Dr. Who and used extensively in nice hard acid.
I woulda thought with some distortion and a really short delay, but I just can't get that "stepping"/choppiness that you need.
thx

- indeed a vocoder.. or a ring modulator can do a nice job robotizing vocals as well...

- I was going to say pull the kitten's tail while you slowly cut it's head off, but that would be gross and disgusting, not to mention straying from your real question. And those kittens didn't really look like strays...

- The robot voice is usually created in 1 of 2 ways:
1. A Vocoder
2. A talk box
Or a mix

- Doctor Who dalek voices were done with ring modulation. Check the Analog Heaven archive for more info

- This G-1000 has a bunch of voice factory presets, everything from choir oohs and aahs to short, choppy downright irritating stuff. Doesn't it have a sound module similar to what's in the JP-8000??? Can you get robot voices from the JP??? What if you just get a cheap voice sampler? I can get really good robot voices off my toy Yamaha.

- Elfarran, because I don't know if you're just abusing another questioner, or are just ignorant of what he's talking about. In either case, Runner is asking about the harsh robot voice that one hears in so many places, like the Daleks, various computers and robots in movies, and the like.
The voices in your G1000 sound like voices, but don't allow them to "talk", with new, intelligible phrases. Neither does your Yamaha.

- get a flanger pedal and there is usually a robot setting you can get. just talk through it and record.
ive got that analogx thing, while its cool, its hard to understand sometimes, and it doesnt pronouce things the way you want them too.. my friend had a really good program was was clear and always pronounced words correctly.. ill try and find it.

- Someone had a topic up for what I'm about to ask but i'm going to ask it anyway because I forgot to go back to it. How do you do the stuttering thing? Do they do that in the mastering stage by chopping up the audio or is there an effects processor that does it? Or is there a synthesis technique used to do this? I've heard it in some lousy music so I know I don't have to be real good to make it happen THANKS!!!

Re:How do you make the robot voice? (03-Sep-01 05:23PM

- nationnon- there are a few ways to do that. one is by triggering a gate via side-chain. another is by pumping your audio through a synth and setting up the lfo to accentuate the amplifier stage. quite simple. one other is to pump midi volume changes to your sampler.
of course you could just talk through a fan. :D

- Why dont you take the 3 seconds to look up the answer you already know is there instead of wasting our energy? I mean, honestly, you stated that you KNOW where to look for it, and that its already been answered... yet you want us to explain it all over again.
Great, there goes 30 seconds of my life I can never get back.

Re:How do you make the robot voice? (04-Sep-01 01:19AM

- Hmm...there's quite a few different ways you can get these types of effects, the aforementioned being a vocoder or a talkbox, a ringmodulator (Alot of Zoom's rackmount effectors like the 1201 have both vocode and ringmod), yes even the afore mentioned flanger with a high rate setting with lots of feedback. Another way is with Delay. Set the repeat rate at around 0-100 milliseconds, play around with the feedback, and you can get some robotic effects (though not very intelligable).
These effects of course will all provide varying voicing effects...different robots for different folks! Another option (cheaper, for sure), is to get one of those Yakback type toys from ToysRus, the ones with settings like "Alien" and (Gasp!) "ROBOT". Lofi, but fun.
That AnalogX Sayit program is pretty good for SpeaknSpell type voices...you have to kind of trick it to get it to pronounce stuff correctly...try different phonetic representations. Not bad at all for free!

- kelly, the thread is gone. it was a long time ago when I saw it. The midi volume method seems to be the easiest. I'll probably end up using that way.

- I think you can still get the Electrix WarpFactory Vocoder for $99 from Musician's Friend & Guitar Center. It's not the best in the world (I like the sounds through my MS2000 better) but for the price it's hard to beat. It also has a very interesting "Hold" function that can allow you to do some very interesting stuff.

- i just got that talking prog that i thought was really good. it wasnt as good as i remember.. but i think its better than analogx maybe..
just do a search for wsp300.zip its freeware and is easier to use than analogx. not that analogx is hard, it just is annoying sometimes:-)

- The warp is pretty cool for the price...the Formant freeze/Hold button that guy's talking about is awesome...if that button can be controlled by midi (don't know if it can), you should be able to do some cool stuff with it.

I can't stand you. You're an arrogant twat to people, and I'd be willing to bet you don't even know quite as much as you let on. At least some people are here to learn/teach. "electronic musicians knowledge base". Hmmmm. What does that imply. Maybe that we're here to help each other out instead of talk shit to and about each other. Take you head out of your ass.

And just so you know, the last part of the post was a joke.
