How to get rid of clicks n pops (30-Jan-02 11:08PM
)
- Anyone know what I can use to get rid of clicks n pops? I record a bunch of audio, then I chop it up, rearange, and maybe shorten certain areas. Sometimes when I peice it back together I get these anoying little sounds that shouldnt be there. How can I solve this problem?
Thank you.

- Sounds like you may not be cutting the audio on a zero crossing point. Most audio editing software will have an option (i.e. Logic has a check-able option for "Search zero crossings" and I think SF 5.0 has too). All it means is your audio software will then ensure that any cuts you make are automatically done at the nearest zero crossing point so as to avoid the clicking and popping you mention.

- BTW - it's easier to explain with a diagram, but I don't have one handy. :-(

If the code doesnt work, try this link for the image I'm trying to point too:

A quick diagram I made shows Zero Crossing :)
It also may be caused if the sounds have an instant attack with a large amplitude. To fix this - It's called digital clicking. To fix this, zoom in, grab the front of the sound and fade it in slightly... this should remove the clicking.
It wont "destroy" the sound. For instance, BT does this to all his sounds before loading it into a sequencer - All his music is done this way (No midi).
Hope that helps.

- Peak is very good for zooming in on clicks and smoothing them out.

- You could always chop the audio at the click point then specify a x-fade at that point 10-20ms should do it.
In logic you can select all the audio then tell it to x-fade accross all splice points - saves time - not sure about DP - I did see an x-fade feature in 3.1 at NAMM.

- I use DP, but it really doesn't matter what sw DAW you use, they all have the same functions, PT, Logic, Cubase, etc. Fade the beginning or ending of any audio that isn't a clean cut. For short lenghts of audio use a shorter fade at the beginning. For longer lengths of audio, like a pad or legato strings use a longer fade. Most important though, let your ears be the guide. A book will guide you with the concept, but how you edit your audio is always subjective to each individual person and song. Just practice that a few times and it'll feel natural to you.
