Mr. Eddie.... What's the diff between a JD-990 and JV-1080? (07-Feb-02  10:48PM )

- Seems like the JD-990 is more warm from what i've heard, for some reason. And it costs less than the 1080. Should i trade in the 1080 for it?

Kelly64.... Re:What's the diff between a JD-990 and JV-1080? (07-Feb-02  11:09PM )

- The JD 990 is the rack version of the JD-800 synthesizer.

The 1080 is the "standard" version of the JV series romplers.

- I wouldn't trade the 1080 in for it. It is more "glistening" sounding, but you might miss the wide variety of patches the 1080 has, and the greater features.

brokentoys.... Re:What's the diff between a JD-990 and JV-1080? (08-Feb-02  12:21AM )

- one starts with a jd and one starts with a jv and the latter is less good sounding than the first.

- The JD-990 is far, far more than a rack version of the JD-800...having owned both, I can say that with surety.

Should you trade a JV-1080 for a JD-990? Since I am not you, I cannot answer that without knowing more about your setup, goals, etc.

That said, if quality over quantity is what you seek, I would do the trade in a heartbeat.

- I'll keep the JV if you do use multitimbral and want to have more expansion slots and polyphony. I'll get the JD if you mainly use it for sound as it definitely sound better than the JV , but only 24 voices, and one expansion slot. I personally would go for the JD for it sounds much better and the JV sounds just been way over use, I heard it everywhere, especially them HBO special.

Mr. Eddie.... Re:What's the diff between a JD-990 and JV-1080? (09-Feb-02  02:06PM )

- I never use my 1080 for more than 1 sound at a time, but i do like number of waveforms it has in the ROM, not that i would ever use some of them.. I find it hard to crank out anything I feel good about using in a mix. I like dark edgy sounding things. Where can I find the list of waveforms in the JD990?

I have the Vintage Synth expansion coming in the mail, and that extra 255(?) patches it comes with on the 990 sounds inticing.

What would happen to patches made with a vintage board stored in the RAM if I swapped out the board for another? If i can swap sound boards without losing the stored patches i think i'd trade up my 1080.

Spectralab.... Re:What's the diff between a JD-990 and JV-1080? (09-Feb-02  04:11PM )

- I tired that once with my old JV-880... I put the Orchestral board in it, saved a bank of patches, then pulled the board out to see how the patches sounded once they reverted to basing themselves on the internal waveforms... suffice it to say, they were pale imitations of the versions you got with the board installed.

- You cannot swap boards that way if you intend to use the patches without the board present.

Mr. Eddie.... Re:What's the diff between a JD-990 and JV-1080? (09-Feb-02  04:57PM )

- But if i plug the board back in will the patches find the right waveforms again?

- I should add: at least they did when I tried that little experiment with the JV-880

- if i were u,keep the jv1080 and also get a jd990.unless u got another 64-voice/multitimbral module or workstation...

Gonkulator.... Re:What's the diff between a JD-990 and JV-1080? (12-Feb-02  01:52PM )

- The problem with the patches on the Vint expansion board(, or any other one for that matter) is that you can only have 64 user patches in the JD990 at once. You can use data cards as an additional 64 at a time, or you can swap patches via MIDI, but it isn't convenient. I have preferred the card route. But to have available all 256 Vintage patches designed for the JD, you have to have four data cards, hardly a cheap option. For me, this and the 24 voices are the only negatives. Otherwise, it is easier to edit, sounds more "analog" if you want it to, and has a more powerful efx setup.

- than again, do you need access to all those patches?

I would rather pick 32 or so that kinda suit me, edit them to make them what I need them to be, and then store those internally...
