- I know its a very common way of creating musical "tension" - especially effective at a break or interlude. It can also be used to other effects... depending on the intervals and modes used in the song.

Re:unresolved (20-Mar-03 09:13PM

- It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're writing commercially, I'd say that 9 times out of 10, unresolved tension isn't good becuase most listeners want things nice and neat. There are songs that pull it off, but it sure is tricky. I would say that the lyrical content would have a huge role in determining if it's an effective device. The lyrical themes would really have to lend itself to unresolved music.

- Yes, it is more often used in the "moody" genres like soft indie pop, goth stuff, new wave, and the possibly defunct "emo", among others. And of course, it is also used in orchestral peices where dynamics and emotion are constantly in flux.
But jingles... in about 95% of the time I would say no to using unresolved endings.

- Yeah - Unesolved endings !! We Like
But it does depend on the context and it also depends on the type of unresolved-ness !! ha ha
You can do so many forms of unresolved endings - Just listen to any of the music links in Friends for open and questioning endings
I really dig Unresolved stuff - Unfortunately not many of muy clients have the understanding :(

- this is an interesting topic.
basically, unresolved rules.
it's funny because i wrote a track two years ago that i loved and everyone else hated because it has "no ending".
i was asked "why did you not finish it?". i respond "but it is finished!".
i simply reached a point in the development where, as with sculpting, i realized any further addition or augmentation of the mold would result in an inferior product.
you may hear it at http://www.mp3.com/opaeque/
track is called 'ete' and its the third one down.
it's a pretty textbook example of "unresolved" i think.

your poem is a very brilliant image; it is scary how well it goes with the music piece actually.
the inspiration for 'most-distant' was when i first relocated to my new (now current) home located in the midst of a large forest. i spent some evenings sitting in the grass looking up and breathing; it appears you have had a similar experience.

- It also depends on your audience type. Some audiences, like those who listen more "actively" (actually listen to the chord progressions...key changes...etc.)than "passively" (just singing back to the radio) enjoy unresolved music because in their minds they can hear it resolve, when it never really does. Listen to a lot of the contemporary composer Eric Whitacre (esp. his choral works) without stopping. You will have a headache from having to fight the dissonances with your musical ear while picking out the soothing hidden melodies. Kinda both at the same time, which makes his music phenomenal.

- how to end a piece of music? that is the overarching question.
resolved or unresolved or...?
there are other perspectives, because those are but two sides of one coin.
there's the fade out, where you really don't know what happens.
there's the abrupt ending...that just is.
returning to resolved/unresolved: simultaneity.

- I did a song, about 7 years ago or so, with which I was pleased.it is a song about an 8 year old boy,who sees his sister run out of the house crying. she runs so fast, by the time the boy gets his shoes on and jumps on his bike, his sister is no where to be found.each street he looks at is empty.he begins to cry.he doesnt understand what caused this.years go by and the boy has grown up,but he still kneels beside his bed at night, and prays.altho the sister has written and even gotten married, she has remained a stranger all these years.each time he kneels beside the bed and prays, he goes back in time.to that first time. strangely, a hormonal imbalance during her pregnancey has caused her to become manic depressive, and her second husband decides he cant handle it.they split up. later on after the child is born, she decides to take a nice long trip to her folkses home in the pacific north west. she goes thru an episode while visiting, and takes off walking, with out a jacket or a sweater, and no money.its freezing cold, and she dissapears.after missing all night, and still no word from her, an A.P.B. is put out for her. after a day or two, some sketchy reports begin to trickle in. history seems to have repeted itself once again, altho she is found and brought back safely to the family, her stay,is cut short, as it is determined that she needed to get back to her own immediate family. once again, she has distanced herself from the family, thru her neglecting to take her pills. she goes back home to north carolina. and back into obscurety. what seemed to be a glimmer of hope, turned out to be a glimmer of the past. with the song ending the same as it began and no ending, no conclusion, except for the little boy kneeling beside his bed, saying a prayer.

- I did a song about a bloke who arranges to meet his Girlfriend that he hasn't seen for ages. Very romantic, 3/4 waltz time.
It will be a long awaited and eagerly anticipated Christmas reunion. They arrange to meet at her place in a part of west London known as Kew.
But he mis-heard, and spent the next 25 years sitting and waiting on platform 7 at Crewe.
Crewe is a large rail station which serves as a hub for many UK routes. The town of Crewe is a shithole. Kew is an affluent area and home to the World famous Kew Botanical Gardens. These facts are not relevant to the song. Actually they have nothing to do with MUSIC THEORY either.
I never figured whether they should eventually meet and live happily ever after or whether it ends up a song about unrequited yearning.
I just can't work it out.

- I think sometimes if the artist leaves the song unresolved it lets them keep the creativity open, "an artist never finishes their work, they just have to abandon their work" this is a half ass job of trying to remimber a quote by someone, some artist, cant remimber the quote or the artist right now, wake-n-*ake, but its so hard sometimes to just put the cap on all those feelings that you get when making the song. is this close to what you were all trying to get at or is it more technical than this emotional attachment thing.
