After the stir caused by the Fxpansion VST to AudioUnits adapter – a piece of software that allowed you to run VST plug-ins as AudioUnit plug-ins, Fxpansion have continued to to do the seemingly impossible and released yet another format convertor. You can’t blame them, as so many software houses appear to have dragged their feet in coding cross format versions of their plug-ins. Now Fxpansion have announced the release of their highly-anticipated VST-to-RTAS plug-in adapter for Pro Tools 6.x and Pro Tools LE 6.x users. The VST-to-RTAS allows users of Pro Tools to incorporate a vast range of VST effects plug-ins and instruments directly in to their sessions. There are now literally hundreds of VST plug-ins on the market, from vendors such as Steinberg, GMedia Music, Bitshift Audio, MDA, reFX, Waldorf, Muon Software, Image-Line, Synapse Audio, 4Front, Big Tick, Virsyn, RGC Audio and many others – not to mention the vast array of freeware and shareware VST plug-ins available at sites all across the Web. Once installed, the adapter is invisible to the user - plug-ins load and behave like RTAS plug-ins, integrated in to Digidesign's advanced plug-in architecture. Thanks to its high-efficiency design, CPU overhead from the wrapper is so low as to be practically non-existent – less than 0.1% per instance on a 550MHz processor. FXpansion's Managing Director, Angus Hewlett, explains:
“Digidesign’s RTAS plug-in architecture is the choice of many professional users, and enjoys a vast user base. As the leading developer of plug-in adapter technology, we are ideally placed to offer a bridge to the huge selection of plug-in effects and instruments available in Steinberg’s VST format. Our technology provides an unprecedented degree of integration – the VST plug-ins are converted ‘on the fly’ to virtual RTAS plug-ins, and from the user’s perspective behave identically to other RTAS plug-ins.” The VST to RTAS Adapter is available now from FXpansion's online store at
