How often have you wondered how a certain song was created? And I'm not talking about humming the first bars in the bath, but how all the individual elements were crafted, assembled, and processed to make the final piece.

Well here's a facinating insight into that world - a free ProTools Session of a Nine Inch Nails song "Only" from their latest album With Teeth

Here's the skinny:-

Pinewood Studios, (July 13, 2005)- For the first time ever, Digidesign has partnered with a major recording artist to offer a free Pro Tools® session download of a hit single. Digidesign and Nine Inch Nails (NIN) have provided a download of the Pro Tools session for "Only" from the new NIN album With Teeth. All Pro Tools|HD®, Pro Tools LE™, and Pro Tools M-Powered™ system users can now see how "Only" was created and remix it to make it their own. The download of "Only" is available now at http://www.nin.com/onlyprotools.

Cutting edge audio technology has always been an integral part of the NIN sound, and the new album is no exception. A Pro Tools|HD system was at the heart of the creative process for With Teeth.

"All of With Teeth was recorded using Pro Tools," says Trent Reznor. "This Pro Tools session we’re offering as a download doesn't start out 'mixed' in any way. We—Digidesign and I—decided that this format would be the appropriate one for you to try your hand at mixing, so the session comes up pretty raw. I've also included some alternate parts and takes in playlists that were not included in the final version for you to experiment with."

For some mixing insights from Trent Reznor himself, pick up a copy of the upcoming Summer issue of DigiZine at a local Digidesign dealer—or read DigiZine online—and discover how he used Pro Tools to sculpt the new NIN album.* And be sure to catch NIN on tour with the Digidesign VENUE live sound environment. Check the NIN website for tour dates.
