Free, open source DJ app Mixxx made its debut in the Mac App Store two days ago, and has already jumped to the number one spot.

"We're completely overwhelmed by the response," note the developers. "We wanted to be in the Mac App Store to reach more users, and now we're reaching far more than we ever expected!"

The news is interesting for a couple of reasons:

  • It demonstrates that there's substantial interest in music apps within the new App Store environment; and
  • It shows that indie developers can use the platform to dramtically expand their audience.

Much of the DJ app's success is because it has a surpisingly full feature list for a free app:

  • Shoutcast / Icecast support
  • External Mixer Support
  • ReplayGain normalization
  • Waveform Gain
  • Key lock buttons
  • Revamped default skin
  • HSS1394 support (Windows, OS X)
  • Improved FLAC support
  • Revamped metadata parsing
  • Metadata writing
  • Millisecond time display
  • Updated MIDI mappings
