Synthfest 2017: Tasty Chips GR-1 On Show

US Granular synth on display      09/10/17
    MP4 7:41 mins

The guys from Tasty Chips were in buoyant mood, after their Kickstarter was funded at 300% at its end. The interest in the beautifully designed Granular synthesizer was in evidence at Synthfest. The instrument offers up to 128 grains per voice - ranging from a few milliseconds to 2 seconds per grain, there's plenty of options.

With up to 2 minutes of sample time to play with in a patch, the mono sample has a neat panning probability feature which spreads the grains into the stereo image. Yes its based on a Raspberry Pi 3 but there's some additional stuff going on to drive the nicely specified LED display. The art seems to be that they've really thought about how you interact with that and the controls to make the Granular Synthesis simple to use.

Currently the GR-1 can give you up to 10 voices, but the team are working on code optimisation to get the count up to 16 voices.

For full details on the GR-1 check the orginal Kickstarter campaign.

GR-1 will be around €800, and due to the extra funding, they will be running a second production run pretty soon making it available for general sale.
