The Sennheiser 421 is a work horse. I use it for saxophone. It works great. Great tone, and it can handle the dBs.
All those old saturday night lives with Lenny Pickett, he uses a 421. Probably still does!

It's a decent mic for specific application. I think it's best suited for recording percussion, especially Drums / Toms. Besides percussion, it's got an ok sound to it.. but you should really select a mic for it's application. For vocals, acoutic guitar, piano, electric guitar, brass or anything else.. this wouldn't be my first choice. Actually, now even my second choice. Don't get me wrong, it built well but is really too expensive for what it can do.

That's a nice and old professionnal microphone - sounds well, built as a tank .Makes voices and instruments sound warm and precise. If you find one, buy it - but do not forget: you'll need a special adaptator to plug-in the MD 421.
Better for recording voices and non-amplified instruments. Do not use it on stage, that's not his main purpose!
